Does your SN child use an iPad?

posted 14th Feb
So a little history on us, Grant is 4 autistic and nonverbal. He goes to a preschool for disabled children and they use iPads in the classroom. He LOVES them, and does well with them, so he will be getting his own when we get our tax money (which allegedly is supposed to be tomorrow). What kinds of apps does your child like/use? Are there many free ones? About how much do the paying ones run and are they worth it? And lastly, what kind of case do you have/would you recommend? Even if it were going to be strictly adult used, it would still be going in a case. Since it's primarily for my 4yo...I can't see a way around a case. I'm willing to pay a decent bit for it, because the whole system has to stand up to the toddler tornado.

We are off to therapy in a bit, but I will check the thread a little later. Any input is appreciated!

There are SOOO many apps for kids on there now, we don't personally have one but we have iPhones. I was planning on getting an iPad with our tax money as well as the "family" iPad. They do a lot of learning with it in my son's school and he isn't SN.

Yes we ue an I-Pad. We were recommeneded to use it for either games or a communication app. Pro-quo lo to go is the best communication app. Also for games and even ABA style games go to autism speaks .com they have tons of free autism apps. My son (same age, and sounds similar to your son in terms of abilities) loves Thomas puzzles with videos, and Chimpoo videos. My son is also very interested in spelling and letters (he is suspected of being hyperlexic) so we have about 20 spelling, puzzles kind of apps.

also I recomend a very sturdy case-and forgo the extended warranty because if you buy an industrial case they are guaranteed not to break, and te extended warranty is only useful for one time, so after paying an extra 200 bucks if it breaks again you are out of luck.

Ah thanks ladies! Is there a specific kind of case you might recommend? I think Otterbox makes an Ipad case, and everyone RAVES about Otterbox.

Its soooo big and clunky though.
the lifeproof cases protect about the same, but more.
