i also just noticed that these are "milk chocolate" and not like-- the fudge ones. maybe that's adding to the suckiness?

yesss! exactly that! i was afraid of over-baking it so stopped, but it was definitely...goo-nasty in the middle. hmpff, now i know better  

I think the applesauce trick only works on certain baked goods. More fluffy cake-like recipes. Lol.
