Clearing your head

How do you do it??

I want to go to bed, but every time I lay down my mind won't shut the smurf up. I can't stop thinking and obviously that's preventing me from sleeping. This happens every night, but tonight is a lot worse than normal. I'm physically exhausted, but my mind won't turn off.

I've already taken a warm shower, and I don't want to drink/eat anything. I just wanna go to sleep

Write everything down that you're thinking about. It helps me sometimes. Also, reading puts me to sleep.

Did you try any of the sounds you use for putting the kids to bed? Also, try ditching the cell phone in the bedroom if you have it by your bed. Leave it in the kitchen, or anywhere but by your bed. There was a recent study, I think the the New England Journal of Medicine, suggesting that cellphones by your bed tend to keep you up later, even if you aren't on them. Also, sleeping with the TV on never really helps you sleep (you may not do that, but I know people that do. My own father likes to do that and he never gets a good nights sleep.). It just keeps your body awake. Books are okay, but usually they still keep your mind occupied. Maybe you haven't identified something stressful, or upsetting (BESIDES the not sleeping!)? At any rate, good luck. If you find something that works, post an update. If it isn't of the pharmaceutical variety I might try it.

i can never just lay down 'n go to sleep cos of this,
and showers/baths/anything that puts me even more alone with my thoughts makes it worse.

Watch something funny like Family Guy or South Park, or you can try to meditate yourself to sleep! Picture a beach scene and focus on all the sounds at the beach.

I was like that for a while. But it helped me with PPD a bit.
