Vicodin
posted 13th Feb
have been prescribed Vicodin for severe shoulder pain since about 26 weeks. I am almost 35 weeks, and just want to know if anyone else has been prescribed Vicodin, and if baby was ok? I am worried for I have read a lot of baby having withdrawals... I only take 1 to 2 per day when the pain is very very bad to the point I am crying... Any advice ? I plan to just deal with the pain from 36 weeks on, as I will get induced at 39 weeks, but my doctor told me being in pain can actually be worse.

Do you feel withdrawals when you stop? If so it may be wise to keep taking the pills. Babies going through neonatal abstinence syndrome are kept extremely comfortable while they're being weaned, it may very well be easier on baby to cope with medical help after delivery than to deal with side effects in the womb with no assistance. I had to take a kind of similar drug, a partial opioid agonist, during pregnancy too. With my daughter I stopped at 36 weeks and I feel it was a horrible decision. I was overly pain sensitive during delivery and had to spend extra time in the hospital, and my baby passed meconium into her fluid, likely as a response to the distress my body was going through. Although she did not experience withdrawal after birth. I didn't expect it at all, I was on a crazy low dose. This time I'm terrified, but I honestly think I'll just keep taking it as prescribed. I've been given a fairly low chance of him having NAS and I just don't want to risk putting him through distress before birth when he may still be born totally fine. Yes, mothers who are on like 100 mg of methadone for addictions treatment will likely have a baby in the hospital for a month or so, but I doubt that would be the case for you. Maybe chat with the hospitals pediatrician to see what your odds are and what treatment baby will receive. I booked an appointment next week to do just that.
Hugs to you! I know how scary it is.
