Infant nursing through the night, help!

posted 13th Feb
My sister in law has been staying with us, and my neice who is 9 months old seems to be waking up a lot throughout the night. Her mom has to nurse her non stop though the night and the second Aria loses hold of the boob she wakes up crying. My SIL is desperate to get a good nights sleep and find a way to get her daughter to sleep without nursing constantly. She's fine with giving her the breast to sleep and waking up a few times to feed her but not the constant nursing all through the night. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a growth spurt. My son was like this the first five months of his life. I slept propped up in bed by pillows with him latched on my chest all night.

She could try the No Cry Sleep Solution. A few members on here have used with some success. It does sound like a growth spurt though or maybe she just needs the extra comfort right now. I can however understand the frustration.

8-9 months seems really common for sleep 'regression' time, partly linked to the realization they are separate beings and the development of separation anxiety i'm sure. She could also be teething, about to get sick, about to start doing something new, or all of these.

Can you have her LO for an hour in the day so she can nap? prepare her a nice dinner? let her go for a bath to relax? these sorts of things are most likely to help and the constant feeding from LO will pass.

agree with all of this. OP- when my DD when 9 months almost exactly she started waking up every hour to nurse...it was hard, but stuck with it...i think it is a very common time for a big growth spurt. DD is 16 months now and we STILL have bad nights where she wakes up every hour (or so it seems)..but then the good nights keep us goin' lol. good luck to your sister! sometimes all you need is ONE good night ya know?

Maybe I'm different from others, but I was still doing this with my baby at 6 months and then we saw our pediatrician for her 6 month check up. The dr. said that she shouldn't need that night feeding so instead of feeding her when she wakes up, we go in - change her diaper if need be - and tuck her back in. She only cries for a few seconds if at all and goes back to sleep.
When we put her to bed, I take the same routine. She's awake when I lay her down and she goes to sleep on her own. It took maybe a week and a half for her to get the hang of the routine, but it was worth it for us!

Not all babies adjust so easily

Some also believe the child's need for the contents of breastmilk should be encouraged and honored whilst the child shows this need is so great. Personally i would've liked more sleep but i know DS greatly benefited from all the brain boosters and antibodies and sensory regulation involved with night nursing. Pedi's are generally only trained in the basic nutrition aspects and i think the choice has to come from weighing up research alongside your individual situation.
