Should I change from breastmilk to formula?

posted 9th Jun
My daughter is almost 3 months old. It seems like she has had diarreah most of her life. She had about a week and a half recently where it stopped and her poops were normal, no more stomach issues, spitting up etc.. Now she is back to spitting up chunky spoiled looking milk (sorry tmi) and having EXTREMELY runny poops. I think she has a big sensitivity to dairy products in my diet. I've tried so hard to avoid all dairy, but it seems like its in everything, even places you wouldnt expect and I cant afford to shop at an organic or specialty store. Has anyone had this happen and gone to formula? Did it help? If I knew what to avoid eating, I would do it, but dang it just feels like everything I eat causes my daughter pain. My husband is 100% against formula, but I hate feeling like I'm hurting her. Sometimes I just dont eat b/c I'm afraid it will upset her stomach and I just dont know what to eat.

Well if its a dairy issue... formula is DAIRY based. So that's not gonna help. Personally I'd stick with breastmilk. Its FAR superior nutritionally to formula. Besides, you'd probably have to use Soy or some alternative formula. Not only does it STINK to high heavens, but is hella expensive and your breastmilk is free! So I'd say stick with the nursing. Good luck

First of all. Breastfeed babies poop is always runny and yellow. It is never hard until they start food, so I doubt she has diarreah. Secondly, it sounds like she may have acid reflux. My son has reflux and is exclusively breastfed. He was very sensitive to dairy products and I had a very difficult time cutting it out of my diet so we put him on zantac. He still spits up a lot but is not in pain any more and doing much better. I would never suggest to someone that is alreayd established breastfeeding to switch to formula. There are always ways to fix problems with breastfeeding, talk to your pedi about her spit up issue

My co-worker had that problem, she said that she avoided anything that had dairy in it. If you really want to breast feed more than anything then you're gonna have to sacrifice a little bit. You can by alot of non dairy foods at any supermarket you would just have to read every label and if you're not sure if anything has dairy then don't eat it. Better safe than sorry, she did it and she breast fed for 4 years! Once they hit one yearmost babiesgrow out of it.

But if that doesn't work then soy formula is for you! Good lucK hun!

Not true, Soy formula is non dairy and enfamil's soy is called Pro Sobee and it costs the same as the regular one here in NC and on it's website. Sammy drinks it and it does wonders to her, she actually smiled after the first feeding. It does not "STINK" it just has a small different smell which you get use to it quickly and won't even notice it after a few feedings.

Now breastmilk is the best choice. I have to breast and formula feed because I don't make enough milk.

you can get non dairy formula... my husband was lactose intolerant and he was fed lactose free formula 24 years ago... they still make it, ive been checking it out in case my little one is lactose intolerant like her daddy. Plus I have heard from 3 different mom's that have 2+ kids that breast milk makes stool softer then if they were using formula instead.

Oh ok I thought that you said that it wasn't non dairy. How much more expensive is it there because it costs the same as regular here.

My baby has had the exact same problem. I chose to take all dairy out of my diet. It's a pain, but worth it because that what was best for him. He is 9 months now and I just recently put some yogurt back into my diet for the calcium. He has been fine with that now, so I hope he is outgrowing it.

I didn't shop at specialty shops. Everything I bought was found in the regular shop. Rice milk, soy yogurt, ect. I just cut out things like mayo, butter, cheese, chocolate. If you make your own food it's pretty easy to forgo diary. But your right in that it would be in most everything premade.

Could you tell me a little more about zantac? Because Sam is sensitive to cow protein and they soy formula does wonders to her. Now I'm trying to go to a lactose free diet because I think than when I give her the breast she still has a bit of a problem but not when I formula feed her. I'm trying to do my best to soley breastfeed but I'm just not making enough.
