Quoting bbbt:" Well, no Pope has resigned in 700 years. It's pretty historical, Catholic or not. "

So? He felt like I couldn't do the job properly, is what I've gathered. That doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Lol.

But like I said, I'm not Catholic, so I don't really even know what the significance of the Pope is.

Yeah I think that's the part that everyone is worrying about, not that the Pope wants to resign , but that no Pope has resigned in like 700 years and a lot are taking that lightning strike as a sign of ''something" that isn't good.

It's just something that hasn't occurred since 1415. It's historical.

And the lightning strike happened just hours after his announcement, that would raise my eyebrows slightly, too.

Pure coincidence. It gets hit pretty often. Why does everything have to be a "sign" to religious and superstitious people? And even if there were a god, why does he have to be mad about the pope resigning? Maybe it's hit so often because he is mad that there is a pope in the first place....?

Act of nature and nature only, but that's a cool pic.

Maybe it is an act of God-but that God is ZEUS and he is PISSED.

I was brought of Catholic and no longer practice anymore but still have very much respect for the religion and the Pope. I do not think him resigning has anything to do with the lightening strike. I think him resigning is a wonderful thing if he is not in good physical health and feels he can no longer spiritually head the catholic church he made the best decision.

Well a lot of people don't believe in coincidence.

I can see that. Yet they believe in god striking a vatican out of anger... heh.

Umm... Coincidence. I'm sure it's struck by lightening fairly often but there was never reason to talk about it before now.

If it was also struck by lightening 700 years ago when the last pope resigned, then maybe...just maybe... Actually, still nope. Coincidence.

It's just impossible to be respectful of other people's beliefs isn't it?

Gah.

The Bible says that basically, in the last days, there will be a "peacemaker" and the the world, on the whole, will LOVE him because he brings peace and prosperity to much of the world. Benedict is a very conservative pope and I really don't think that he meshes well with the "liberal" world view that we have today. He is against abortion (which will never end), anti gay marriage (which will inevitably come to be accepted in most, if not the whole world) and is a man of tradition. There is no place for a pope of this kind on the world's stage.

He will be replaced with a much more liberal minded pope, which more meshes with the popular world view, and opposes the Bible.

I don't have any reason to think that the lightning was "God", but as time goes by, I'm sure hindsight will be 20/20.

Maybe he was intimidated into resigning.
