Change his SSN?

posted 13th Feb
When my son was born, MIL wanted his social security number to open up a savings account for him. I was uncomfortable with giving it out at the time and our relationship was rocky. My inlaws arent very trusting people-and are very secretive. I ended up giving it to her and asked that she shred it right after the bank had it because I wasnt comfortable giving it out.

Fast forward-his social security card has been misplaced in my home. My husband needed the # for insurance papers-and as anlast resort I asked MIL if she could contact the bank and get it for us. Her reply? 'Oh i wrote it down and have it in the safe at home-just incase anything ever happened.' I was polite an thanked her but it made me very uncomfortable knowing she still has it.

Im pretty sure Im going to tell her Im getting him a new SSN since it may have been in my wallet when it was lost- and I dont plan on giving it to her again.

Is that wrong? Would it make you uncomfortable?

You can't get a new number. And, what's she gonna do with it, steal his identity?

You can't change it. My daughters card was stolen out of the mail and they refused to change it.

It's so weird that it makes you that uncomfortable that she has it. I mean honestly.

You CAN change your number, but not for the reasons in your situation.

Idk, what could a mother-in-law do to her own grandkid with the social security number? I mean aside from keep it in a safe place when the mother lost it.

Not entirely true. There are circumstances in which a new number can be issued, but it's not an easy process.
