No, you should not have given it to her if you didn't trust her. That's your mistake, you should have opened it up yourself instead. My FIL used my husbands identity to buy something-never paid for it and it went into collections and damaged his score for years.

Im not overreacting here people-thats my sons identity and you cant trust people. I wouldnt like my own mother having it.

We were fixing our relationship and i had asked her to destroy it after she gave it to the bank. She was super nice and completely agreed. Now this. I thought we were turning over a new leaf.

Well I'm glad I don't have to have that conversation with her.

This whole post is confusing. I mean, you don't want her to have it because she used your husband's SSN to buy something in the past, but you gave it to her anyway? If you care so much about your kid's SSN, how'd you lose it? All of our cards along with passports and birth certificates and marriage registration are all locked in my filing cabinet.

I would be more worried about the fact that my kid's SSN is lost and lord knows who will find it than the fact that my MIL has it, locked in a safe, written down.

I'm seriously not trying to be brutal, I'm sorry if I came across that way. I'm not one of those girls who picks on people. I just meant that I was confused and ultimately, I don't think you have anything to worry about. 10-15 years ago when you could get a credit card with nothing but a SSN and put any DOB, sure...but not these days.

Not really brutal. Why ask the question if you don't feel you were over reacting? Why give it to her if you had doubts about her honesty? Youre the person in the position of power, no one could force you to give his social. They wont give you a new SSN in this case, especially if there is no evidence it was misused.

Get a indentity security service... Its cheap... If ur husband already had his smurf stolen and u went thru the drama of changing his ssn, i cant imagine they would not recomend that...

Thanks-i may have taken some of the comments to heart. Whacky hormonal day I guess. I dont know what all it takes to missuse someone identity. I guess it just made me uncomfortable that she didnt shred it like she said-and she still has it. I immediately went to ill intent.

I think ill just cool it with this-and next time just tell her im uncomfortble giving it out?

I know noone forced me-but i definitely felt pressured and my marriage was rocky as the time so he wouldnt share his opinion. I felt not giving it to her ment i was keeping her from doing something great for my son. If it came down to it she couldve opened it up without his ssn
