Buying a truck on a Saturday

posted 13th Feb
We are buying a truck outright from a private party. My DH want's to go on Saturday. My questions are. One, will we be able to draw out the money that we will need to buy it on a Saturday. Two, how do we go about the whole licensing and title thing on a weekend. The reason that I ask the second question is the truck is about 4 hours away from where we live. Also, should I get the insurance set up on Friday since the office will be closed on Saturday?

If you make it to the bank before they close (the bank I use closes at 12 noon on Saturday) then you should be able to get the money. You will have to wait til Monday to send off the title and get the new tag for the truck, but as far as insurance, I have bought a vehicle on the weekend and just called the 24 hour number on the back of my insurance card and they were able to add it on right then and just emailed me proof that I was able to just print it off.

Talk to the DMV, they can tell you the proper procedures for moving the truck before it's liscensed and such. We always would get a signed receipt from the seller stating what we bought and what day we bought it so that if we did get pulled over we'd more likely be let go due to the fact we just purchased it. I believe there may be a grace period to get all that done but it varies depending on what state you live in.

If she can actually insure it before he has to drive it home, then he would be able to drive it home legally and if he were to get pulled over he would have insurance and he could fill out a bill of sale with the seller so he can show them that he just bought it, maybe things are different in other states but here, you have 30 days to apply a tag after you buy something.

I'm leaning more towards getting it on Friday. Our taxes are coming in that day, so it's a gamble on whether or not it'll be in by the time we get there KWIM?

If not, could you just do it Monday? Or is it one of those things that you want to hurry and get the truck before someone else snatches it up?

I have to take my MIL to the airport Monday and spend the week at her house taking care of her animals and what not. Plus Saturday we have a birthday party, our friend is turning 21. I won't be drinking but I can guarantee that if we don't have any plates on it we'll get pulled over.

In VA they do something called a trip permit. It's a three day pass for perspective buyers to drive a car legally, perhaps there is something like that there? As for insurance I'm pretty sure all places have 800 numbers that are open Saturdays.

Call the DMV, they can tell you exactly what you need to do that way you don't risk getting in trouble.

It would be through the DMV, not the courthouse.. at least here anyway. Just go to the DMV and ask how you would purchase a truck and drive it legally before you title it. There has to be a way to do so.
