when did your child start telling you no?

posted 13th Feb
Well the title pretty much asks what i would write here.

My 19 month old is on a roll with telling me no lately.
And when he means no he means no.
How did you handle the no phase?
The word coming out a childs mouth makes my blood boil.. unless its a yes or no question im asking.
Not when i say "pick up your bath toys" and he replys no until i ask if he wants to get popped. Then he drops the attitude and does what i told him to do to avoid getting in trouble.
Im also trying to quit telling him no as much and explain why he isnt suppose to do something. Hopefully that will help a little.

My son still likes to tell me No sometimes. Not very often but he will and he knows really quick that, no isnt an answer unless i asked him a question. The first time he would say it I would give him a warning.
I.E If I asked him to pick up his toys and he said no I would tell him he would be in trouble if he didnt do what I asked and I would walk away. Five minutes later I would come back to see if he did it and if he didnt I would ask him again. If he said no I would out him in time out third time of not listening he would get a smack there would be no warning. After a while he got tired of me being a mean ass and just started doing what I asked.
Every kid is different though so you gotta try a few things to see what works for you.

you hitthe nail on the head at the end. You taught him no. Instead of getting angry.. be proud that he picked itup.. helearned something from you.

now... start saying YES more than no. SOme of the best advice I got as a new parent.

when you want to say no.. redirect instead. (say he's touching soemthign he shouldn't.. intead of saying no... say.. "let's play with this instead" or give him a choice. say.. "how about we do xxx or xxx.. which do you want to do?" it gives him some control, while still being redirected.

My daughter was saying no at 9 months (no kidding, though she is a freak of nature).

My son just now started saying no and he turns 3 on Monday (though he is delayed and in ST).
