re: Should CPS be involved if a child has FAS?

Quoting Natural Goddess Mommy:" hahaha dumb. babies dont feel high in the womb. Nothing that gets us high from MJ transfers to the baby, ... [snip!] ... BF. Cannabinoid receptors are in our bodies, and cannabinoids are only found in MJ. The only thing bad about it is smoking."

I said "Unknown". There is still a great debate and that is why there is an issue. I don't really care either way. I personally enjoy a good joint once in a while. I am not going to fault anyone. I just don't partake in anything while pregnant and that is my choice.

Quoting Not tellin:" That is apples and oranges. After 21 weeks you can no longer get an abortion. At that point, it is a ... [snip!] ... baby. Otherwise, the mother is under CPS scrutiny and has to follow a certian set of rules to get out from under their thumb."

It was only within the last 10-15 years that abortions were limited that way and their a still loop holes for defects or medical reasons.

How does continuing to smoke marijuana after birth affect the child where it could be considered abuse (you know...as long as you don't INVOLVE them: ie. hot boxing them or blowing the smoke into their mouths)? And what about women who drink throughout their pregnancy knowing the risk of FAS, but are lucky enough not to have an FAS effected child? Shouldn't they lose their children knowing the risk they put them at if we are considering prepartum consumption abuse?

Quoting Nymphadora:" What about women who are given medicinal marijuana for nausea or because they had a pre-existing condition ... [snip!] ... prescription. For Washington and Colorado mommas: Does CPS still get involved for THC positive newborns now that it is legal?"

Like I said, I think they get involved because it is an illegal substance. If it is prescribed, it wouldn't be illegal would it?

I wish they would. I had a "friend" who litterally drank a 6pack of beer in front of me in less than 2 hours while pregnant with her son. Sadly, he was her last child and that was not an isolated inncodent. She smoked worse that a refinery stack and always had a beer in her hand. Sooooo many times I wanted to do something about it. I never did. I regret it. But, I guess you don't really grab a nerve until you have your own children and I didn't want her thinking I was doing it because I was struggling to get pregnant. She was the mom that would give her kid a bottle of sugar water, lay him in the crib and have a party in her house and not think twice about checking on her children all night.

I want to say yes to all of them... I hate them at the best of times & think using any of them is disgusting and selfish during pregnancy... BUT then I think about all the babies who would end up in the system, being thrown in and out of care... Again, as much as I think people should grow up once kids become involved, I know that there are still responsible parents who do these things and would do anything to protect and love their child... It's societies fault really, all this "her body, her choice" (note: I am NOT talking about abortion with that statement) crap, women think they can abuse their own bodies and it's not going to affect their child, but it's really the luck of the draw. I wish so many women wouldn't gamble with their babies health.

Agree...

I used to slang waaaaaay back in the day, soo my job was to get people high, I used to know some chick who I didn't trust so I never sold to her, 9 month preg, on a sick 1... I felt like crap, I hadn't had kids yet... 1 time I was at friends house and she showed up with the newborn, bought a sack then went to breast feed him  I called the cops and told
my friend to get her out... she ended up being locked up for a while,
my friends mom is raising her baby... who's turning 8 this year...

I found out I was preg with dean at this time, me and his dad both sold, I gave everything up and went back to being a starving student, I was also an addict, alcoholic... I was sober leading up to my pregnancy and of course through out the pregnancy, but dean was born with a birth defect... the dr.s and specialist gave me maybe 4 diff reason why it may have happened, but I believe it was just karma, for me, I suffered and felt soo much guilt about everything...

She actually is the "friend" who was cheating on her husband and found it appropriate to tell my husband I was cheating on him. She was supposed to be my best friend her and her then husband were in our wedding not but 6 months before she pulled that. Sadly, my husband believed her. I knew she was cheating but, I felt as a friend it was my place to encourage her to tell her husband not get in the middle of their marriage. They had two kids at the time and I didn't want that on me. Well, when I told my husband that it was actually her, that is when he really believed her. After all, why would my best friend lie about me? So, we nearly divorced. Fast forward a few months later, she gets pregnant. To this day, I think it is the other guys. The timing of the one night (he came back to town) and the pregnancy jive. That was 7 years ago. I don't speak to her anymore obviously. She admitted to her husband she had cheated but managed to leave out the last time. Conveniently.

Anyway, I don't know much about CPS involvement. I am not a smurf parent so I have never had them into life. I think that anyone who intentionally does something during pregnancy that can cause harm to their baby or who engages in abuse of illegal substances (prescribed anything in proper dosing excluded) should have CPS involved. The way I see it is, how a woman cares for her body and baby during pregnancy is often a precursor to what kind of person/ parent she is/ will be.
