No. She wants to wait 6 weeks to see if the fluid in his ear doesn't clear up on it's own. Generally they wait 3 months to see if the fluid subsides on it's own before resorting to tubes. HOWEVER, if he gets more ear infections she will just make an appointment for tubes because of the severity and how many antibiotics he has been on.

She thinks that after the fluid clears he SHOULD be able to hear from that ear- but isn't quite sure. She said generally that's the case, but doesn't want to make promises. I'm not too concerned. He responded very well to the stimuli, just favored his left ear- so he COULD hear, just obviously not well from that ear at all. It shouldn't effect his speech/development as long as it is just that ear, apparently.

Oh. Now I understand it. I would see another ENT that doesnt sound right. 6 weeks of antibotics, 6 weeks of ear infections... and she wants to wait. I would wait a couple more weeks to see if it clears up.. if it doesnt then I would take him back.

Err no. I'm sure she knows what she's doing. She's the best in the state and what she is saying makes perfect sense. If his ear infection is gone, and the fluid in his ear clears up on it's own, why bother with tubes? Anesthesia on a 10 month old isn't something to take lightly. I'm not going to go in and demand she put my kid under. She's being smart in waiting and seeing if this was just something viral that needed to pass, or if it will recur. Obviously, as I said, if his ear infection comes back or the fluid doesn't clear- she will make an appointment for tubes to be placed.

I think you are doing the right thing by waiting on the tubes. I had many many ear infections when I was young and they ended up doing tubes in my ears four different times. The tubes never worked and now I have to much scar tissue in my ears for them to do anything else.

Thanks. I know what we're doing is right... I just hope that it clears up and he doesn't need them. However, if his ears get infected again, I definitely want him to have the tubes..... he's been so miserable. Waking up screaming in the middle of the night, loss of appetite. He's such an incredibly happy and easy going baby so to hear him cry is simply heartbreaking. Thankfully the infections are gone for now. Only time will tell.

Aw, I feel for you little guy. One thing that really helps me with the pain is a really warm washcloth or warm compress on the ear. Also, ear candles, though I don't know how well he would lay for that at his age.
