The Lord's Prayer - Mandatory?

posted 12th Feb
Do you think The Lord's Prayer should be mandatory to recite every morning in both public and private school? Why or why not? Don't answer "just because" and leave, lol.

I say absolutely not, but apparently on FB, I'm in the minority.

If someone wants to recite the Lord's Prayer, then fine, but don't force school children to do so. No one would be ok with my child reciting the Wiccan Rede loudly in class, so why should it be ok to assume everyone is Christian and force the prayer on children? It's hypocritical.

that would never happen, but no I don't think it should be mandatory. It's ridiculous for someone to engage in religious activities if they are not religious, and it's even more ridiculous to force people with different beliefs to pray as if they believe in one.

I don't think they should be able to. Like you know they can have a moment of silence though and everyone can say their own little prayer.. in their head.. But shouldn't be forced on children.

I want to see what the person's reply is whoever voted yes.

I don't think any type of religion or religious rules should be enforced or encouraged in public schools.

In public school? Absolutely not. In a private Christian school that is fine.

First amendment people.

As a Christian, I absolutely do not think that it should be mandatory. I do believe that prayer in school should be optional. We had a group that met during our lunch period where we could meet and eat lunch and pray together if we wanted to. I think also that if Muslim or any other religious believing children should be allowed to start such a group to pray during a lunch period or prior to the first period class if they choose to do so. I think it is good to encourage beliefs of all types to feel that they can congregate as kids if they wish.

absolutely not. Separation of church and state. All Religion should be left out of public school. If you want your child to pray as a class then send them to a private school.

Same here.

The way I see it, I don't care what you believe in, just don't jam it down my throat.
And if it would ever become a mandatory thing in public schools, then my kid(s) will be home schooled.

I don't think that schools should have the right to put programs in place that are religious but I believe the students should be allowed to form such groups.

No because religion is a choice, whether or not the parents have taught religion to their children. Unless the school is in fact a private religious school then no. They have no right in forcing children to recite a prayer in any other schools that aren't religion based.

I think they should be allowed to have groups that don't interfere with their curriculum, but I don't think they should be allowed to use the school as a way to spread their religious message or act as missionaries.
