To have an Epi or to not have an Epi.....

posted 12th Feb
That is the question!

I had one with DD. Hated how after I couldn't walk for hoursssssss (even after having emergency surgery, I was still very numb). But I had to have one. Long story.

Anyways.......

I'm being induced the first week of March (medical reasons). How was it epi free for you? I want to try and push myself as far as I can without one. My hospital has jacuzzi tub and massage for pain relief. What did you do for pain relief? How was labor and delivery for you? Share your epi free experience!

Thanks

Mine was not epi free. But my epi only last 45 minutes. They told me I was lying when I said that I was having contractions.. blah.. blah..blah.. The contractions were horrible. I was bawling my eyes out.. I pushed for 6 minutes, once you get to push, the pain for me was actually not that bad... after actually pushing the baby out is the most amazing feeling ever.

Because you go from the worst pain to no pain, instantly.

I was able to walk around about 30-45 mins afterwards. They wanted me to lay in the bed for another couple hours, cuz, apparently my legs were still numb.

My daughter I insisted on having all natural. I refused to sign the consent for the Epi just to make sure. During transition i was cursing a little bit, but thankfully I only had to push 3 times and she came out... I'm debating whether I want to go all natural again, hahaha, I know this baby is gonna be bigger and I'm not looking forward to the crowning!

My first I had no pain meds of any sort. With my 2nd I had an epi, and IV drugs before that.

I'd NEVER do IV drugs again. Ever. They were horrid. I was loopy as hell.

If I had another baby, I'd probably do the epi again. It worked well for me, no side effects, no problems. When I went without it hurt like a bitch, haha.

I love my natural births. For me, the recovery was much easier without the epi.
For me, when the pain was almost unbearable, it was just about time to push and be done. I pushed for an hour and a half with my one epidural birth. The other three I pushed 3 times, for about 3 min, and 3 times again.

With DD I was induced at 6am had her at 9:27am. Pushed 3 little pushes, she was out. I honestly don't remember ANYTHING from giving birth to her because I was so, so, so out of it from all the pain killers I had (needed emergency surgery after). I wasn't even dilated or effaced when my Pit was started.
If I can guarantee this time around will be the same length of time, I'd totally do it drug free for the experience.

My hospital had a walking epidural.

It was great being able to labor on the ball and walk around.

I don't know why more hospitals don't do them.

With my daughter I hated it! It hurt getting the procedure, and it didnt even seem to work for me. and they had to turn it off because I "wasnt pushing hard enough" come to find out she was stuck in the birthing canal and it wasnt my fault at all..

With my son, it worked amazingly! it was a different doctor doing the procedure, and a compleatly different method to administer it as well, with my first I was laying on my side, with the second I was sitting down, hunched over my nurse while he did it, and I couldnt feel it at all.

After the 2nd, I FELT I could walk just fine, but they wouldnt allow me to for a few hours so I had to use the bed pan...with about 6 people in my room! thats the unfun part...But they didnt want to give me another cath, and they wouldnt let me walk to the bathroom *shrug*

I will prob be getting it with this one if there is enough time to get it lol.

Walking epidural? I may be pretty dumb. I've never heard of that. What is it?!

I didnt know there was a walking epi either?! I will have to look into that.

I did get IV pain medication as well, I dont know WHAT they gave me....But I was loopy for about 30 minutes..all I remember was the nurse asking me if they were working..and attempting to reply to her, but all that came out of my mouth was complete laughter....her and my husband both looked at eachother and said yup its working...
Though it wasnt really WORKING, it was just altering my mind to make me think it was working..I could still feel the contractions, but my head was focusing on what the medication was doing vs the contractions...So instead of focusing on either of those, I decided to play a game of wack-a-mole...hubby said i went into a trance, and my head my bobbing up and down...
it was my way of keeping track of what was going on around me, and time in between contractions. I absolutly hated the feeling, and hate the feeling of being impared so much that I dont know what was going on...
so my wack-a-mole game was me hitting them in my head and one would pop up every second, and I would count 60 hits and 1 minute..to keep track of time/contractions..

I told my hubby and my nurse, they both just seemed to laugh at the analogy of what I was doing..and thought it was just the drugs, but it was my way of staying consious of the world.

I ws given a pit drip and did it pain med free it was uncomfortable I wont lie but just move around as much as you can walk, sit in the shower if they have one and let the water run over you, use the pregnancy ball, have your hubby or support person massage your lower back thier are a bunch of things that help but personally movement for me was the best way.

I'll be induced with pitocin. They have the Peanut Ball to move things along. A jacuzzi tub, shower, massage therapist on call, yoga ball. I'll try to walk as much as I can. My SIL is also a massage therapist, so I may see if she can come and do some pressure points for me.
I'm totally going to see if I can go this natural. Or see how far I can go before I feel like death has taken over me
