Don't have a child old enough, but I will say that a great way for them to practice is for you to write the word in highlighter and have them practice tracing it in pencil.

My son was able to write his name (if we wrote it on the paper first so he could see it) when he was 3 and right about the time he turned 4 he was able to do it on his own without having to see it while he was writing it.

3 for spelling it, closer to 4 for writing it.

I second the highlighter/pencil thing. Dots are annoying after a while!

We practiced handwriting and/or letters 3 days a week during "school". At 4 we bump school up to 4 days a week (which is where she started to write her name unassisted.)

This was when she was 3, we did stuff like this mostly. A few words here and there.

My little one is 3.5 and has no interest in writing yet. she still cant color in lines either. but according to stein phylosophy/woldorf education kids shouldnt be rushed to write , age 6-7 is a good time to start writing. and actually growing up in Slovakia, kindergarden was all about playing, hands on stuff, second language and then once you go into 1st grade ( 6years old ) you start learning how to write and read. and this is what i plan on doing with my little one too.
of course if child is interested in writing do encourage it earlier!

No way. Kids learn differently. I don't think my son will care at all next year to learn these things (at 3) like she did.
