re: what age was your LO when they

posted 12th Feb
He was 3. His name is Zack. He can write the full thing (his handwriting is actually better than my brother, who is 30 lol), and tell you how to spell it if you ask him to. He can also type it. He can also read and write simple words. I find his name scrawled on the white board I leave in the hallway all the time. lol It's cute.

I write and label everything for him. He picks it up. He will be four at the end of this month. He can write his name, Mommy, Daddy. He can type more words than that, from memory.

My son really wanted to learn how to read, so that's where we focused. I teach him at home for preschool, so it is kind of whatever he wants to learn. He wanted to read, so I taught him phonics. The writing just came about one day. I found the word "Zack" scrawled on a piece of paper, when he does not care at all for instruction in writing letters. lol

He doesn't like to color at all, either. Just paint.

At what age could he completely read? That is what we're working on right now.

He'll be 4 at the end of the month. He recognizes many words and sounds out simple ones. Not completely reading independently, but he picks up words as he goes.

I'm going to teach him all the words that are in Green Eggs and Ham, since there are about 50 in there. Being able to read a whole book by himself should build confidence, which is why he needs. He doesn't like to fail, which lends him to not trying things he is uncertain of.

Gotcha. My daughter is 4.5. We're using 100 Easy Lessons right now, and we're only a few weeks in and she's able to sound out most 3 letter words (along with the list of sight words she knows.) Just wondering! I'm definitely not stressing it, but she has been begging to know how to read.

My daughter was doing it at 3, but I never went out of my way to teach her. I got some preschool workbooks when she was 2 (or maybe early 3), just because I thought she would enjoy them, and she just had a really strong interest in writing. She writes whole notes now (she turned 4 in Dec), but we have to spell most of the words for her. If she wasn't interested, I wouldn't have pushed it. I'm not an overachiever mom, but she gets bored fairly easily and I like to make sure I'm giving her challenges.

Most of the 3/4 y.o.s in her class can't do it, and it's no big deal at all.

I'm not familiar with 100 Easy Lessons.

I just read to him a lot, and we made together an alphabet phonics book with construction paper, glue sticks, and markers. lol

This reminds me of Kay. She writes notes to her Grammy and I'll sit here and spell out things for her.   It is sweet.

And I fully agree.

yes according to the little box they try and stuff every child by age. every child develops differently , and homeschooled parents do not have to follow the same curriculum that schools use.

Yea, that's the kind of stuff we were doing. She just got too bored. I think she's ready to start real "school". She thrives off of stuff like that.

This is 100 Easy Lessons.

By 3 DD could write almost anything if I showed her the letter on another paper. She's 4 and can do a couple letters - has been doing an A since she was 2 but she can't just write or spell on her own. I honestly thought they learned that smurf in school so we only casually work on it lol

J is four and knows what letter his name starts with, but not how to spell it. He starts preschool very soon and I think he'll probably learn within a month or so.
