My 4 month old needs to eat more...help!

posted 12th Feb
When my daughter was born she was 8 lbs 14 oz. My son was even bigger and gained about 2 lbs a month, and more than doubled his weight by 6 months. He was taking 6 oz at 6 weeks. My daughter, while born big, is turning out to be pretty small. At her 2 month appointment she was in the 50th percentile for weight, and today she weighed 13 lbs, dropping her into the 30th percentile. Her head also made the same shift. The doctor said I need to try to get her to eat more. She usually only takes five 4 oz bottles a day. Sometimes she will take more, but nothing consistant. I'm pretty worried about it, there is no way she'll double her birth weight by 6 months. Other than her weight she is completely normal. She is in the 90th percentile for height, she has chunky legs, chubby cheeks, she easily rolls over, she grabs at toys, she constantly chews on her fingers, and she sleeps 8-9 hours a night. Anyone have any tips on how to get her to eat more? She's gotten in a phase of taking 2 oz then just "playing" with it until it is finally gone. Sometimes after 4, she will act like she's still hungry, and I feed her more, but then she usually spits up. Help!

Uh, I could be wrong but I think 13 pounds at 2 months is pretty big.

I think she sounds prefect the way she is. Your dr needs a reality check. And I didn't know they had to double birth weight by 6 mos.

Yeah I just checked the baby book...my son was 12 pounds at his 2-month check-up and his doctor said he was perfectly average and healthy.

Yeah, they should double around 6 months or at least close to it. She'd have to gain 4 lbs and 12 oz in 2 months to do that. When she was born she was in the 80th percentile and now she's in the 30th. It's the big drop that has him concerned. She's only gaining about 2/3 of what she should.

I don't feel like just because a baby was big in the womb that they should have to stay that big. It doesn't make Sense.

I think doctors get too hung up on numbers, personally. If she's developing normally, is healthy, and meeting all her milestones...I think she's fine. Kids eat when they're hungry.

I was thinking the same thing. Mine are just over 15 and 16 lbs at 8 months and were 50th percentile.

My baby is 8 months, shes 20 lbs. She only takes about 3-4 bottles a day at about 4 oz each. maybe another 2, 4 oz bottles at night. I don't think there is anything wrong, that's how they are, perfectly normal.
