Mold in trailers/mold allergies (long)

posted 12th Feb
Okay I guess I'll just jump right in lol. This gives me the creepies thinking about it...

We live in an older model trailer. The entire park is older model trailers, with a couple of exceptions. We moved in last February. I was very pregnant with my daughter, and needed a 3br place to go. This place was very affordable, and my daughter was born 3wks after I moved in (she was 5wks early). Several months ago, while I was paying rent, I hear the (old) park manager on the phone talking to someone about the fact that they thought they had mold in their trailer, and what could they do etc. I probably should have paid more attention, but I knew the one she was talking about and honestly that trailer has seen better days. Most of these are VERY well maintained, mine included, which is why I wasn't really paying attention.

Fast foreward to this week. My daughter came home from her Aunt's (father's sister) in Atlanta. It's been raining here pretty steady since Saturday. She came home Sunday. We got home around 4-ish, by 8 or 9 that nite she was snuffly and snotting a little. Yesterday it got a little worse, and she was a little fussy and wouldn't settle last nite. Today it's a full blown stuffy nose, sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose...she keeps rubbing her eyes like they itch. Like allergy symptoms. So I posted on my FB she's getting sick, and her Aunt texts me and asks if I've had her allergy tested for mold. Well, no why would I? That's not something that's just routinely done here at check ups and stuff. She said she's noticed her clothes smelling "moldy" (what exactly does that smell like?) and asked if I've noticed it. I said no, because I truly haven't. My daughter is VERY RARELY sick. This is like her second or third cold in her life; she's had 2 double ear infections but so has my son over his lifetime (he's four, with his second set of ear tubes and his adenoids out).

I guess what this long ass post is trying to ask is...what would be things I'd look for? I called and left a message with her doctor's nurses, she has her 12m check up on the 25th. I'm not convinced that this is nothing more than a cold, what with the weather we've been having and the fact that she just got back from ATL (which is four hours to the north of us, and from what they tell me a drastic temperature etc change). But I feel like I wouldn't be doing my due dilligence of I didn't at least look into it.

Sorry it's so long...feel free to ask anything I didn't cover. I'm VERY sleep deprived >.<

I live in a older model trailer as well. I was hospitalized in June for passing out and having terrible headaches. Come to find out we had black mold all in outlr trailer. So please be careful and try and find it. :/

O.o...dang I'm glad you're feeling better. Did you have any previous symptoms or sickness? She's hardly ever sick, but I know thats not always conclusive

Have you thought about buying/renting a dehumidifier to put in your home to see if it will pull any moisture out? When we had mold issues and got ours I was shocked at how much water it got out. This is just my take on it, I'm not sure if it will work without knowing for sure you have a problem. Just thought if you use one and it pulls water you would know you probably have a problem.

Could you ask your landlord to bring someone out to test for mold? Like a professional, not just a maintenance man. Check under your sinks, in the bathroom around the tub and try using a dehumidifier in your daughter's room to see if it helps her.

No I didn't! I didn't even know that was something you could do! Thank you.

Unless you can confirm there is a problem, they won't :eyeroll: The woman wanted a testing done and they said she could pay for it if she wanted it done without any proof it was needed.

That's two votes for a dehumidifier so far, I had no idea. How much do they usually run? and are they all typically the same?

O.O...her pedi's office just called me back. They said because she was gone for two weeks, being oout of the local allergens for so long and then coming back especially with all the rain stirring things up it could be anything. But she said if I wanted the test done on her it's just a blood test and I can ask the doc at her appointment if I decide to have it done.

Thank you for the input ladies, I'll be investing in a dehumidifier for a start. If anyone else has any input, I'll still be checking the thread later.

Well that's bullcrap! They have dehumidifiers at target for 54.99 and a mini one for 24.99 but it's only sold online on targets website.
