dropping objects

my 8 month old is driving me crazy!!!
he has toys in his hands, drops them on the floor, cries for someone to give him back then drops it again as soon as it s in his hands. and this goes on for ever.
he must find it funny somehow and I wouldnt mind if I didnt have to hear him cry every minute of the day.
its probably just a phase but does anyone knows how long before he gets over it.
My first never did anything like that but then again my 1st was just a doll never making a sound.

Hand it back to him once and then stop. He's playing with cause/effect.

DD does this. When she throws something down I yell, "oh no oh no" and she thinks it is the funniest smurf ever.

I figured he might be learning about "gravity" (cause/effect actually makes more sense). if he drops it it just goes on the floor.

if I stop getting the toy back will it not be like me stoping him from developing?

This is part of brain development. When babies do that they are learning about things out of sight not actually being gone forever, cause and effect, etc. It's not really a "game" in a bad sense. Play IS a child's job, learning through play, all that child development yada-yada (yes, I took all those development classes in teacher training).

That being said, I have been wondering myself about investing in those sippy cup straps to attach things to the stroller, high chair or location where the baby will be dropping things from. If nothing else, it would probably make it easier for me to pick them up AND keep things cleaner. I also saw some of these crayon bungee things at Target last week for smaller items like that (eventually).

I am not there yet, so not sure I agree with the 3-strikes mom, but found this: http://articles.earthlingshandbook.org/2011/03/05/what-to-do-when-a-baby-repeatedly-drops-something/
I have a feeling the oh-no! response is creating a whole new game you really DON'T want to play?

I'm probably going to get all sorts of flack for this.... Let him Cry. He will learn very quickly that you are NOT at his beck and call. I pick it up the first time, and tell him no more, or its going to stay there. He drops it again, I do exactly what I said. I let it stay there. If he wants it, he'll pick it up. If he doesn't, he'll walk off and find something else.
Yes, he is learning cause and effect... if he drops it, it will fall. You are also teaching him this cause and effect... if I drop it, and cry, Mommy will come pick it up for me, and I don't have to do it myself. This is setting the foundation for later, when its "if I cry, Mommy will (give me/let me do) whatever I want.

Its okay to let him cry for a few minutes. It might get on your nerves (I know, I've been through this twice now), but "this too shall pass".

He's learning object permanence (hooray!) so he'll likely cool down on the game when he fully gets the concept that things don't disappear when they leave his site.

He's like a tiny scientist, discovering new and different ways to view the world.

No. The oh no response is because she does think it is a game and I play along. She thinks it funny, idc. If she drops something she will pick it up,unless I say oh no oh no and then she throws it again.
