posted 11th Feb
What should I do with my needles after they been used?! I have four jugs full of lovenox needles which thats not bad because they have a safety feature on them after they are used but my heparin does not..... where can I dispose of them safely?!

You can dispose of sharps cases in just about any pharmacy, hospital or clinic. In fact even social service buildings and certain community centers (at least in major cities) occasionally have medical waste disposal boxes outside. You should check your city's website to see where the nearest drop off spot is (some areas even do pick-up) or just call your nearest pharmacy or clinic. Definitely take them to an official disposal site, that's the last thing you'd want to just throw out.

Call your Dr or local hospital. I know that somehow they help with proper disposal.

Ask the doctor who prescribed your lovenox

Thanks! I will check that out.... I didn't know where to dispose of them, so I basically filled up my first sharps container... and started using milk jugs... but I didn't want to throw them out.... because I didn't know where to properly....

I think lovenox needles could be thrown away anywhere.... because of the safety feature... but I didn't want to chance it... and I know for a fact my heparin needles have to be disposed of properly because they have no safety feature on them... it's the pop of the lid and fill... and thats the last thing I want someone getting a hold of.

You definitely made the right call. They're generally incinerated. The safety feature is awesome for preventing accidental pricks, but there's still the possibility of one breaking during trash compacting and it's always best to keep used med equipment out of the landfills either way. Trust me, we have a needle exchange at my work and you would be amazed at how careless people can be with disposal (not even just the injection drug users, we've had crazy encounters with diabetic clients and such too) You rock for being proactive and considerate about it.

My home health aid was supposed to bring me another sharps box and never did.. I assumed she was going to take that one with her.... but she never came back, so they are sitting in jugs under the counter now..

Take them to your docs office. They'll take care of it!
