re: Calming down a cat?

When we got a cat from the shelter, we where told to put it in a small room with the litter box and food and water so it can get used to the sounds of the house... Go in the room every couple of hours and talk to it so it can get used to you... Took the cat 3 days...

I got my cat in early December and she's just now getting comfortable with going into the living room and kitchen. Up until now she'd only stay in the bedroom and the bathroom where we originally had her litter box.

Trying to coax him out is probably the worst thing they could do right now. A rehomed cat needs a ton of time to adjust, sometimes that's an hour of sniffing around, sometimes it's 2 weeks of hiding under the couch. But an hour? I'd be more concerned if he wasn't freaked out. They just need to give him space. When I adopted my rescue kitty the SPCA said rehomed cats should be limited to one room at a time over a couple of days so that they can get used to a new space in slow steps. I didn't go that far, we just left her alone for a couple of hours until she came to us, but if he's upset perhaps it's worth a try. They just need to be quiet, gentle, and give him a lot of space. A frightened cat will probably see their coaxing as a threat and freak out even more. He'll come around soon, it's all totally normal.

He came around. When I got there, he was on the couch (they had wrapped him in a blanket, lol not sure why). I sat down next to him and just loved on him. He started purring.. so I picked him up and sat him on the floor. The lady has a newborn, so she and her baby sat on the floor and Gizzy walked up and was sniffing her and watching the baby. I didn't hear/see him hiss, and he was letting the girl pet him. I told them to call me if he doesn't warm up in a few days. He promised he would, because he knows I don't want the cat just thrown outside if they decide they don't want him.

That's what the guy said, too. I'd be pretty scared, too, if someone came and picked me up and took me to a totally new place.

And they were calling him Gizzy   Made me so happy.

Nevermind. She just texted me saying he started hissing at them and they want me to come get him.

So, going to get my cat back.

aw im sorry man. what are you going to do now?
maybe if you do some visits with the cat to warm him up to the place and people that might help. idk if you or they were up for such a drawn out transition though...

I don't think they know what they're doing. They're super young and I think they were hoping he'd be happy-go-lucky and loving on them ASAP. Hell, even when I got him... he didn't poop for 3 days. He was jittery, but he warmed up.

I was trying to re-home him so HE would be happier. SO and I both work full-time, so he's in a dark apartment 8-10 hours a day, all alone. But I guess he would rather have that.

I gave them EVERYTHING I had bought for him, including a very expensive flea treatment (he was infested when I first got him, so more of a preventative measure)... that they didn't give back. A whole new thing of litter, a new big bag of cat food AND the rest of what I had. And asked for NO money in return. Just that they get him neutered, and love him. So, I drove up there... figuring I'd have to drive back with a full litter box. No. They hadn't even taken it out of the CAR. I was like, "Is it all in your car?" He was like... "Yeah, we had some treats up here so I was just gonna leave it all in the car until tomorrow."

Wait, what? Where would Gizzy have pissed/pooped? I literally JUST put the litter in his box, set it down, and he took a huge piss.

My poor cat. I'm glad he hissed at them... must've sensed it was a bad, bad idea

But I can tell Gizzy is happy to be home. He also just took a smurf. So, I'm sure that's another thing they would've complained about. "Why isn't your cat litter trained?"   blah blah blah. Maybe if you would've set his smurf station up for him
