re: Why is downs test being done so much for low risk woman ?

I was offered it and I took it. That was one of my major fears and I felt much better when the results showed that she was fine. It gave me peace of mind.

I can't wrap my head around why so many people think that if you're not going to terminate that it shouldn't matter. Uh, being prepared, maybe? My second child has special needs - she is missing an x chromosome, a condition called Turner Syndrome. We had a LOT of prenatal testing - including an amnio - done, knowing it wouldn't change our course of action, but because we wanted to know what our life was going to look like. Had we not had this testing done, we wouldn't of known what she needed when she was born, and there's a very strong chance she would of passed away.Yeah, I had prenatal testing done when expecting my 3rd, and I have been having it this time, too. I feel that preparedness is a very important matter.

I was 10 years old when my mom was pregnant with my brother.. and she had all of the testing done, and the Dr. told her there was a good chance my brother was going to have something wrong with him. She spent the rest of her pregnancy worried about what was going to happen and he turned out fine. I'm pregnant with my third and i've declined testing all three times. I wouldn't abort if something was wrong and i'm a stressful person as it is..

Only problem with that, is there are A Lot of false positive results, especially with twin pregnancy.

That's why they would then do amnio before aborting I would hope

I had it with my first..and my next appointment I will be having it with this one. I get the ultrasound and blood tests. With my son, I was high risk for Down Syndrome and he had fetal cystic hygroma. We found all of this out because of that test. Thankfully, he's completely healthy, but I just wanted to be prepared just in case. I didn't have further testing beside a scan on his heart. I just wanted to know so I could research ahead of time. This time I'm doing it for the same reasons, although I'm sure things will be fine this time around.

My first son had downs syndrome. I was 19 and the AFP test came back negative for anything so we had no idea until he passed away at 32 weeks. I did have amnios with my last two because I wanted to know.

I decline these tests with each pregnancy. The reason is that statistically they are wrong most of the time. So why subject yourself to waiting for a result, that has a high possibility of being wrong? Why worry and stress yourself out needlessly? You and your body are going through enough.

With the way the medical industry as a whole is, the main reason things are done is for profit. For example: Statistics show the US does more C-Sections now than 20 years ago. The reason is that more doctors prefer to schedule deliveries instead of letting things happen naturally. They want their weekends off. And they make more money by doing a C-section.

Just my opinion.
