Dreamfeeding goes against feeding on demand?

posted 11th Feb
I've been reading into dreamfeeding, but I also feed on demand during the day.
It sounds tempting (that LO will sleep a bit longer) but doesn't it go against the whole idea that you only nurse/feed them when they are hungry.

When I learned DD's schedule, I dreamfed her. It would only take 15 minutes to feed her, versus taking an hour to feed her and get her back to sleep. I'd rather not feed on demand, once I knew when that demand would arise, rather than lose a full hour of sleep. And it never kept her waking up at night, because she sleeps through the night and has been doing so since about 8 months.

Is that when baby nurses while asleep? Gosh my daughter was always on the boob. she nursed ( really just sucked, as I don't' think she was getting much while doing that)ALL freakin night. we co-slept.
I don't see how that goes against feeding on demand

yes, because it's scheduling your own feeding. I don't think it's a big deal, you can still very well feed on demand during the day. I don't dream feed, but I do feed her straight before brushing her teeth and putting her down for bed (other than that I feed on demand). Then she only wakes up once to eat.

I guess thats what we did with Heathen. But it was only because that's when she would wake up to feed. And she'd wake again around 3-4 to feed. Then was up for the day by 7-8.

That's just how she was though. So it was more on demand feeding for her.

LO goes to bed at 7, then wakes up around 11, 3, 5 and wakes up at 7. I'm asking cause if I dreamfeed him at 10 he usually goes to 3, but it's an hour earlier than his 'normal' feed.

Yours had that set schedule too huh? I loved her having a schedule that she followed that she set up herself, made things much easier.

is dreamfeeding a term for bfing babies or just sleeping babies in general.
because I feel like nursing mothers and babies probably do this all the time, I know I sure did especially mothers who also co-sleep.
This is a term I have never heard before.
So is it just offering milk to sleeping infant? or if a sleeping infant kinda half wakes up then giving them the bm milk/ formula?

lol, this was my thought too.. my LO is EBF and he nurses in his sleep, when he wants too, so its more of feeding on demand/dream feeding.. at the same time. We also co sleep...

Just sleeping babies in general. It's like giving them the bottle / nursing them in their sleep, before they wake up for their next feed, theoretically so they sleep longer.

edit: Feeding them when you go to bed, so they sleep longer and you get a bigger stretch of sleep.

We'd put her to bed between 7 and 8, and she'd get up just before we went to bed, so it wasn't a huge deal to me. The nights that I didn't go to bed til 1 or 2, it was an issue. lol But I was an on demand mom for her, and will be for the next one.
Just like for me. I don't eat at a set time, I'll eat when I'm hungry. If I'm hungry at 4, I don't tell myself 'oh its X hrs until dinner so I have to wait' I'll eat!

Oh ok I see, I actually did that alot when I co-slept with cecilia when she was 6months to about a 1 1/2? I think it was a combination of her knowing I had gotten into bed and me knowing she would wake up in just a few hours to nurse so I would just nurse her as I feel asleep. I dont think this is the best idea for babies in cribs though because that would mean moving them around and interrupting there sleep, Also I felt like she would only would take what she needed so she wasnt too full and the rest was just comfort.
