carseat suggestions

posted 11th Feb
SO and I have decided we're using our tax return to get our daughter. her next carseats. (One for his car one for mine) she's almost 5 months and her feet almost hang over the edge of her infant carrier.

So i'm going to need a carseat under 100 (preferably. A little over isn't a big deal) with a tall height requirement (my family has a history of tall girls and I want them to last awhile)

any suggestions would be great

She really should be in infant carseat until the age of 1 yr then you can move to the convertable carseat but at 5mo the infant carseat is best protected for whiplash in infants -- i work in pediatrics so we face this question everyday and yea the may look uncomfortable but they arent their little legs will just touch the seat - AAP now recommends rear facing till 2

She can rear face a convertible seat..
OP.. I have a graco myride 70 for my daughter and love it! I'm not sure what kind of car you have but we have a 92 honda civic and a 99 chevy malibu and it fits fine in both.

A lot of babies outgrow the infant seat before 1 year of age. A rear facing convertible seat is just as safe as one as long as it is properly used 100% of the time. Some people even use convertibles from birth.

She can rear face a convertible.
DS is in a rear facing convertible because he's 21 lbs at 6 months   I'd never leave him in an infant carrier.

OP this is the carseat I have for DS

  • Rear-facing for a child from 5-40 lbs and 19"-40"
  • Forward-facing for a child from 22-65 lbs and 34"-52" tall

I'm not putting her in a new one now. Just starting to shop while I know I have the money, and my SO is kinda bad about spendinf the money if its just sittinf there KWIM? And if she's too tall for the infant carrier (her shoulders are also very close to the shoulder straps and she is growing like crazy) I'm not sure how that would be safer than a RF convertable.

Rear facing convertibles can be used from birth. It's pretty bad that your pedi office is giving out wrong information...

OP my friend has a graco myride and likes it. My DD is 8 months and when she is 9 months we are purchasing a britax boulevard, although that is not in the $100 price range.

i know were supposed to suggest to our patients per DR's if the exceed ht/wt convertible is still safe as long as it has the extra head support - it annoys me at ppl who front face too early because the look uncomfrotable lol but my LO was in infant till 1 she just was a skinny minny

Agreed. My aunt is a pediatrician and gave us a convertible carseat when I was pregnant with my son, so I'm pretty sure they are perfectly safe lol. We used it from birth until he was 3. My daughter is in an infant carrier, but as soon as she can sit up on her own, we're putting her in our Evenflo Symphany. We just use the infant carrier bc it fits our stroller, and it's easier to use when we go out. OP if you have a Bargain Hunt in your area, check there. They have really good seats for about half price.

My thing is more my SO with the money and her exceeding the height requirements for the seat we have now. And she's growing like a weed. I was definitely not planning on FF before a year, but I don't think my carriers going last much longer.

You can rear face in a convertible until the child is 45lbs in some carseats, I doubt any 1 year old would exceed that. Just because they outgrow the infant carrier doesn't mean they need to be forward facing.

Telling people to keep infants in the infant seat until 1 is potentially dangerous information though because if they do and the seat is outgrown and they get in a crash and baby is hurt or killed you could be liable.
