Should I call?

posted 11th Feb
So Im 29 weeks and on Friday I have an ultrasound. I was talking to a friend who just had an ultrasound at the same place I am going to and they refused to tell her the sex of her baby because the doctor didn't specifically ask about the sex. I have never heard of this before, the ultrasound tech at the first place I went at 15 weeks tried to find the sex for me but couldn't and I know the doctor didn't ask. I would be okay with a surprise except that my boyfriend won't discuss baby names or shop for baby stuff until we know and since he works and I don't I can't really do anything about that. Im really frustrated because I was hoping that on Friday we could finally go shopping and I could start getting everything ready. Would you call your doctor and ask about it? Also has anyone else ever heard of this before because both places I have been to for ultrasounds the tech tried to find the sex with out the doctor asking.

Im not really sure. They told my friend they could see what the sex was but couldn't tell her because the doctor didn't ask about the sex.

I bet it is pretty frustrating. Typically they figure out the gender at the 20 week scan. Unfortunately though, i doubt your doctor would order another U/S just to find out the gender. It's something that isn't medically necessary and your insurance probably wouldn't pay for it either.

The only thing you could do at this point is pay a place to do a gender scan. Most 3d/4d U/S places offer gender scan packages.

Well I was hoping if I called today she would be able to just include that in the paperwork for my ultrasound on Friday.

Oh sorry i read that wrong. I thought you meant that *you* were the one who had the U/S where they wouldn't tell you the sex of the baby. Calling can't hurt.

The only way I know that they don't tell the sex is if it is done in the hospital. As they aren't insured in case they are wrong. Like independent owned Ultra sound places. Could that be why? It isn't up to the Dr to request it.

It is an independently owned ultrasound place that's why I just assumed that as long as the baby co operated they would be able to tell me.

That is very weird. Hopefully your Dr will put in a request I guess and see what happens. Let me know what happens I'm kind of curious as to why they won't let you know without the Dr's request.

Im going to call the ultrasound clinic first and ask about it and see where that gets me.

Update: I guess its just the clinics policy not to tell anyone unless the doctor requests it so I called my doctors office but she wasn't in. They said she would call me tomorrow so *fingers crossed* that she will change my paperwork for me and request the sex of the baby!
