He cries when we/they leave.

posted 11th Feb
My 16 month old is going through stranger anxiety right now.

He is shy and closes his eyes when new people come over or we go to one of my friend's houses. Eventually, he eases up a bit and relaxes. However, when the person leaves my house or we start walking out my friend's house, he starts screaming bloody murder and goes hysterical. He is okay after a couple minutes or when he gets buckled in the car seat.

Does anyone know why he does this or have had a toddler that did the same thing?

It's very normal for that to happen around that age.   I remember my oldest son crying when the pediatrician left the room around that age. Obviously personality plays a roll too. There isn't much you can do to make it better. They do eventually grow out of it.

Sounds like he is having difficulty coping with transitions. Pretty normal for that age.

Thanks everyone. Glad it sounds like just a phase.

He is with me 24/7 so it may be just the transition.

DD was the same way around that age. It was especially bad when one of us would leave her. It lasted a couple months and hasn't been a problem since.

So the baby cries literally the whole time? Dd (21 months) is going with a sitter for the first time ever tomorrow and m terrified she will cry the whole time, her stranger anxiety is through the roof

The good things about babies this age is that they get distracted easily. A shiny new singing toy.... a new movie ... a favorite snack.. and they'll forget about everything that was bugging them a few minutes before. Most babies don't spend the whole time crying. They might spend the first 10 to 15 minutes crying, but it normally tapers off after that.
