Hm.

I have 4 kids with my youngest being 2 and none of them have wandered outside like that.

*wandered

And yes, it can happen. As long as you do something to stop them doing it, it shouldn't happen again. We had that happen, because it was a french door, and he just needed to pull the handle down. We are trying to get housing to switch the knob, but it would cost 40 bucks.

Yikes! That's scary! But I also think it depends on the child/children. My mom had four kids and none of us ever did that. The closest she came to anything of the sort only happened when we we in our teens and my older brother attempted to sneak out and forgot that our alarm system also worked on the windows! lol

Mine thankfully went into the fenced in backyard and was just playing with his toys. But i was sleeping still, and of course, i freaked out. So glad nothing happened to him, and we live on a military base.

Yeah, you've gotta be really vigilant.
When my brother was 3 or 4, he ran outside and down the street while my mother was in the shower one morning. I went and told her and she had to run nearly around the whole block in just a towel because he took off like a greyhound as soon as he saw her coming to get him!
It's funny now, but I can only imagine her panic.

I never did it. My sisters used one another as a step stool to open up the door when they were little. lol

Aw that's scary. When my SO was 2 his mom let him play out in the backyard by himself and he climbed the fence. One of the neighbors found him wandering up the street. It definitely depends on the kid's personality. My 5-year-old stepson would be out the door in a heartbeat if he could unlock the bolt while my 6-year-old godson wouldn't set foot out an unlocked door without permission.

Yeah, glad nothing happened OP ! My son has Autism and wanders off every chance he gets. I rarely sleep these days and always feel like I have to be ready to bolt after him at a moments notice...

I know several people who have had children drown in pools and ponds after they wandered outside by themselves. Makes me really paranoid and my DS isn't even born yet. I will have childproof locks though.
