Both of mine have done it. Oldest did it when we were staying in a hotel (on base, thank goodness) during a PCS move. She slipped out the door in the middle of the night while we were all zonked out, and the base police woke us up when knocking on our door. Apparently she was trying to "go back home to Hawaii".

My son tried to do it the other day, but we thankfully had put up those chain lock thingies on our doors (because of his big sister's escape) so he couldn't get out. He noticed Daddy's truck was gone and he wanted to go find him.

My kids are adventurous, independent types, as you can see.

When my son was just 2 and just beginning to open doors he did this. We has no idea he could unlock the locks. He would always wake me up after he woke up. But he woke up, went out the backdoor and was playing in the middle of our dead end street in just a tshirt and diaper. It was summer, fortunately and dh was driving home from the store (so he couldn't of been out there long) and saw him running I'm the street.

I felt so guilty, like the worst parent to ever exist. That day though we bought hotel locks for the doors and haven't had the issue since.

Kids can and will quickly learn how to work those.

My 4 year old was bad with it when he was 2, during the summer. I can't imagine how it would have been had he got out in the winter... -30 to -40... Poor babies. We put super hard to pull off doorknob covers on the knobs. But we don't need them in our new house (despite them being up) since the door knobs are harder to turn... Not that it matters, he outgrew the faze anyways.

I meant locks that they can't reach.
