big boy bed at 16 months?

posted 11th Feb
my son will not sleep in a crib. whether it brings back bad memories from the hospital or what, he wont do it.

right now we co sleep but i really want to get my bed back. i was thinking of getting him a full size bed with a railing and putting it up against the wall in a corner and on the floor and trying that? that way i could lay with him till he fell asleep and then sleep in my own bed without little feet kicking me in the gut all night.

and putting a extra tall gate at his door so that he cant get out of his room at night.

ideas?

I would try, op. I don't look at it as locking anyone away, just making it a safe place for a curious toddler to sleep. We can't cosleep because our bed is WAY too small even for 2 of us. My son has been in a crib and won't even sleep in my bed anyway (I've tried lol). I would try the big boy bed. He might think it's really special and cool that it's his.

My boys all transitioned into a big boy bed from my bed by themselves. I would lay them down each night in their bed and sometimes they would crawl back into bed with me sometimes they didn't. I allowed them to take one of their favorite toys into bed to snuggle with and they understood if they came into my room the toy stayed in their bed.

okay hes 15 months old right now. he doesnt understand the concept of : its night time, if i wake up, come to mommies room.

he would be, me knowing him, probably filling the toilet up with the whole roll of toilet paper or in the playroom destroying stuff if there was not a gate on the door.

when im up? sure. he has the freedom of the whole main floor of the house and i watch him. but i cant exactly watch him while im attempting to sleep.

My son went through a phase about the same age. He would never sleep in his cot (crib) and just wanted to be in bed with us. I would lay with him until he fell asleep, then put him in his cot when we would go to bed, but 10mins later he would be back up.
So I ended up taking one rail off, and moving his cot right beside our bed. That way he still felt like he was sleeping with us. Then I eventually moved his bed away a lil further each night.

i thought of that too but our beds do not match up in height no matter what level i put the crib on, and i dont want him to somehow get stuck in the gap at night kwim? plus i really think somehow he is traumatized by the crib the way he screams if he wakes up in it (hes had multiple surgeries and has been stuck in a crib on a vent without me being able to pick him up for days at a time, so i think it scares him)

I had to set up my sons toddler bed a couple months ago (he is 16 months)b/c he kept climbing over the side of the crib and falling even with it set on the lowest setting. I set it up in my room at first and slowly moved it towards his room now he sleeps in his room in his bed at night there are some nights i have to put a gate up bc of the electric heaters we have so he doesn't burn himself (i really don't see how putting a gate up is trapping your kid when they are made to keep kids out of unsafe areas/ stuff.) Good luck with the transition its hard at first but it will get easier!

thank you

i suppose it would be better if i put a lock on his door than used a gate right? ;P
