Wouldn't hurt to try. I tried doing the whole transition thing, but it was just a headache for me. Once they realize they're alone and that there is a way out of their bed (railings or without) they will go towards the door, if they can't open it they will cry, they will come out, basically just wanting to play since they know you want them to be in their bed lol. But i'd say go for it, it doesn't hurt for you to try. You never know until you try things.
