Thank you ladies!

I was given pitocin after my delivery in order to help the uterus contract and get the lochia (afterbirth blood) out.

Its to help contract the uterus back down faster. Pitocin is synthetic oxytocin.

To help pass the placenta or lochia

All they gave me was ibuprofen.

Ah okay gotcha. Makes sense now!

Oxytocin is a hormone your body produces, pitocin is the synthetic version that hospitals use. It causes uterine contractions (which cause labor, yes)
They give it after birth to help contract the uterus and stop bleeding. It can also assist in delivering the placenta depending on how fast its given after birth.

It does have some pros and cons so do your research  . It is called 'actively managed third stage', or something like that.

I would have preferred not to do it unless I was at higher risk of postpartum hemorrhage and I was (high blood pressure and bleeding during labour) so I consented to the shot.

They gave you a shot? They gave me a bagful that they attached to my IV. O.o
I wonder why that was...

I didn't have an IV for my second child's birth, so they gave me a shot in the leg  .

For my first, I was induced and I assume the left the pitocin going after my daughter was born.

It can be normal, but I refuse it. It's meant to make your uterus shrink faster, but if you breastfeed it isn't an issue...

Not always true. I was bfing within 30 min of delivery and they gave me pit cuz I was bleeding heavy. Usually not case cuz bfing releases natural oxytocin that helps uterus contract but I'm weird I guess lol
