My son was born last Friday at 37 weeks. He weighed 6.77 lbs and was 19 and a half inches long. So after delivery DS's jaundice level's were 9. We took him the day after he came home to have him retested. They said they would call if he needed to come back in. No one called us. So two days after that I notice that his color had gotten worse and that he was fussy and wouldn't eat much. Plus, I had to use a wet wash cloth to keep him awake for feedings.

We took him to his pediatrician and they said that his levels were at 15 when he got tested. They did apologize for not calling us. A lot of good that did us then. He was also down to 5.8 lbs. We took him to the hospital and they tested him again and tested him to see how his nutrients were.

We had just gotten him home, and I was trying again to breast feed him when the doctor called and told us to get him another hospital that has a better NCIU. Turns out his levels were 21 and his sugar was low.

We stayed in the hospital for 3 days. I met with the lactation consultant who told me that on top of the jaundice making him tired and fussy that his frenulum was too short which makes it hard for him to latch on properly. She showed me how to help but we may end up having to get him snipped.

The doctor at the hospital was pretty upset that they even let us go home. He said that another day or two and we may have lost him, at the very least he probably would have had brain damage.

He's doing better now, thank God, but due to our issues my supply isn't what it should be and I now have to suppliment formula with his breastmilk. I kind of feel like I'm a failure... I only had him home for 2 days and almost lost him.

that's scary!

my daughter was born at 37 weeks, and was 6 lbs. 4 oz. her level was 11, i think, so they kept her an extra day to be safe. it's hard when they are so close to that cutt-off. (i think they said 10 or higher and they keep them, but i forget, as it was almost 7 years ago.) she also came home at 5 lbs 9 oz. i wasn't producing milk. never really did.

glad everything is okay with your little guy!

Wow, I am so sorry you went through all of that, but I am glad your LO is doing better. I had alot of problems breastfeeding with DS, and I felt the same way. Your not a failure at all. Just keep trying. Even if you have to completely switch to formula, you did your best, and that is all that matters. You can always breastfeed with your next baby (if you decide to have one).

Thats what I am doing this time too. I figure even if I can only do it for the first week, that's something. I'm hoping to be able to go atleast the first month though. Last time I got mastitis on top of everything else too. Omg it was the worst sickness I have ever had in my life. Just praying I dont get it again.

I also wanted to say that you're NOT a failure!! Please don't feel that way. If you want to, take a look at this site -- there are ways to increase your milk supply IF you want to:

Thanks for the link, I'll definately check it out. I have an appointment Monday with yet another lactation consultant this one is at my pediatrician's office. I figure that if it comes down to it, I can always pump and give him that. Either way I'll know that I tried.

Exactly. You tried. Please don't feel like a failure if it doesn't work out.
