alcohol while breastfeeding.

valentines is next weekend and I'm going on a date with s/o. I want to have a glass of wine, and have read mixed views about drinking while breastfeeding. What do you ladies think? And if you have, did it effect lo?

You'll be fine.

You will be just fine having a glass of wine. Alcohol leaves your milk at the same rate it leaves you're blood stream. The rule of thumb is if you're okay to drive you're okay to nurse. No need to pump and dump.

it's absolutely fine. if you feel ok to drive. you can BF your LO. it isn't stored in your milk.. it's metabolized just like usual... so.. have a glass and don't feel guilty!

I drank while I was breastfeeding. I didn't get really drunk until he was about a year old when I knew he would be ok to miss a feeding or two, but I had a couple of beers after he was asleep as a baby, I just made sure he was nice and full and ready to sleep for a few hours so I would be sober enough to feed him when he woke up... It didn't affect him at all and he is a very smart little guy. If you are sober enough to drive it is safe to breastfeed since the alcohol leaves your milk as it leaves your blood...

All of my doctors have said it's fine. That you can have 1-2 drinks and nurse immediately. Basically if you are sober, your milk is fine. It doesn't stay in your milk, so there is no reason to pump and dump. If you get plastered, simply wait until you are sober. Lol.

To be safe, I would always nurse LO RIGHT before having a drink so that I wouldn't have to worry about him wanting to nurse for at least 2 hours. I occasionally like to have a mixed drink and play chess with DH before bed. I'd just nurse LO right before.

i don't plan on having more than 2 glasses. i was wondering if i had to pump and dump. lo eats every 2 hrs and i was reading online for every glass wait 4 hours before feeding, so i'm just making sure it's ok.

No you won't have to pump and dump. Unless those two glasses get you wasted lol.
