RSV

posted 10th Feb
What does RSV sound/look like? My 5 month old DD is stuffy and congested, she wheezes a little if she's laying down flat, she's been coughing a lot for a few days and today she feels really warm. But no way at all of taking her temp. I need to babysit my 3 year old nephew with Autism and I don't know how to handle a sick baby and a very unruly one. I'm mostly worried about the fact that if I have to take DD to the ER what the hell am I gonna do with 2 kids?? Rip all my hair out   I've taken X to the hospital before when SO had to go, and it was hell when he was not even 2; now he's more mobile and less happy with new places. I can't drop him anywhere, not an option at all. And nobody knows when I'll be done babysitting, maybe at 5 but that's not even a sure thing.

Sorry I know I'm rambling. My 2 main questions are A) What all does RSV do and does it sound like my daughter may have it? Should I bring her? B) How do you handle two kids at the hospital? Should I attempt to bring a friend to watch X in the waiting room-so I don't have to worry about him running around the halls in the ER?

RSV is actually the cold. when little babies get it, it's like the worst cold from hell you've ever seen.
if your baby is running a fever (or you strongly suspect that she does), give her some infant tylenol. do you have that? you can give it every four hours, at least that will get you through the day.
i'm assuming that you don't have an on-call pedi you can call?
if your baby is running a high fever, you'll want medical attention.

When my youngest got RSV I thought it was just a cold. We took him to the Dr (because he was only 5 months old and he was 10 weeks premature so everything scared me) and the Dr sent him to be tested for RSV because he had rapid, shallow breathing.

We don't have an on-call anything   That's why ER is our only option, but luckily any time we go, we're the only patients in the waiting room usually-it's never ever crowded. We have tylenol I just wish I had her thermometer but after we moved it got lost and I don't wanna take her out just to buy one :/

And I only get so worried about RSV because she was preemie, but she doesn't seem terrible. She just doesn't seem like she feels really good, she keeps rubbing at her face and when she coughs she gags and usually spits up quite a bit.

Awe :/ She's a 35 weeker so I get scared about everything too. And I've been watching her breathing but sometimes it seems shallow other times I can't tell

ahh poor baby!
mine are premies, too, i know how you feel.

the thing with thermometers is they're all such crap. my pedi says not to even use it, that i'd know if my bebes had fevers
i always worried that i wouldnt know.
but sure enough, this morning, i felt D and i knew INSTANTLY the kid had a fever for sure.
she wasn't herself, and felt hot, you know? so, fever!
if your baby has at least a wet diaper every few hours, is eating a bit, she'll be ok with some tylenol, at least until your sister is back so you're off baby sitting duty.
do you have a humidifier?
i'm running my humidifier, and giving tylenol every four hours. and trying to keep her as comfy as i can.
that's what my pedi said to do.
good luck, hope your munchkin feels better soon!

Well like I said.....we didn't notice anything more that what seemed to be a cold. I would say that if you don't feel comfortable taking your nephew with you then you should be alright waiting until later to take her in. I would just watch her and make sure she doesn't start having any difficulties or serious changes in her breathing. Once we found out my DS had it, we had to start breathing treatments every 3 hours and had to take him to the Dr practically every other day. I would just make sure to get her checked out before WAY too much longer if you think RSV is a possibility. Better to err on the safe side of things.

I'm just not sure. I feel like she does, but SO says no. I don't know, her whole body is warm, even her toes and she always has chilly toes like me, even when she has a warm outfit and socks on usually. So I 'm not sure. And I'm hoping that if I do have to go that X at least behaves. And no humidifier :/

But thank you!

Aww, well hopefully we can go soon. X is napping so I hope he's nice and happy for the trip, cause if I wait till I'm done sitting, it'll be dark and its so icy I'm not looking forward to that. Thank you

I believe the walk in clinic portage has has on call 7 days a week. Or if you call the er and ask for the on call pedi to call they will have them call you within 15 minutes or so

Haha yeah, highways are all good from what I've driven on. But side roads in Cal are still not so wonderful lol. But I'm already up here so it isn't that bad, since the worst road is 6th St and then it's probably clear right to Portage haha. But I heard a storm's coming in again so I'm scared to leave after dark, and then leave the hospital in a blizzard. Which would be my luck.

Cal is always smurf lol but the speed limit is only like 20 anyway haha

I only live a few blocks from portage which has been nice the few nights I had to drive lo there in a storm. Why don't you use aspiris er? Just prefer portage?

Haha exactly, and I always go slower just because I'd rather not crash on smurf roads like that lol. But yeah I hate Aspiris, just never good experiences there.
