school and work

posted 9th Feb
I've applied to do a Major in Computer Science and Minor in Business Communications next semester. I'll be doing it part time and online, but having to work full time at the same time. Doing this degree will improve my career enormously and open up a lot of opportunities within my industry. Friends of mine are telling me that I should wait a few years for SO to climb the ladder and be earning enough money so that I don't have to work full time.

I don't know because I don't really want to wait to get my own career, but I do understand where they're coming from.

What would you do?

I would see if it were possible to start with just one class at a time, to relearn how to deal with doing all of it at once.

If you feel the need to get started, give it a go! Don't let yourself feel stagnant

Also, you can always ask what penalties there would be to drop any classes you feel you can't handle quite yet.

I would give it a go and see how it all works out. If there is a census date you can withdraw prior if it isn't working out and not get charged.

I am a single mum, I study two nights a week (the two nights my bd has the kids). I also study when they sleep. It is a lot of work but if you're passionate about it, you can make time.
I don't know how you would manage though given you work nights and have your child during the day. When would you do it?

I'll be dropping down to 4 nights a week and two of them will be when SO is home. I'm only looking at doing 1-2 units a semester so I'm hoping that I would be able to get a lot of the course work done on the nights I'm not working or during the day when SO is home.

confused?

That's the bit I'm nervous about because I've done online units before and done ok BUT they've been part of a course I've been doing on campus.

I was in an all-online based program before, and found that I was actually able to fit more in. It was more expensive with all the crap I printed out, but you can fit it in when DH can hang out with the kids on the days you have off, etc.

I have the opportunity to do some classes on campus later on if I want (its basically just the online program for a on campus degree), so if I found that online was to hard I could try and organize classes around SO's schedule. Especially since most the lectures for this particular course are later in the evening and there's generally only one tutorial a week. However I thought I'd give online a go to begin with.

yeah I did my human biology degree at the same university and they have video conferences with the lecturers and tutors. Its also literally 20 mins from my house so I can always drive in and see my teachers, plus I'm allowed to sit in on any lecture and class I want if I feel like I'm falling behind.

I think you're going about it the best way possible!

I'm worried because I was studying medical research on campus at a different university last year but the work load and travel, plus financially (I could only work nights part time) was to much. But that was at a uni nearly 2 hours away and a full time load of 5 units a semester.

I don't think I caught it- is the school you're considering a university as well? They're LOADS more expensive than community colleges, but sometimes worth it, obviously.

If you still somewhat managed doing that, I think you can work through this!

I didn't even consider the fact that you live in a different country. My, I feel silly!

Seriously though, not taking on as much will help, along with that beastly commute. You also have some experience under your belt when it comes to balancing the two, and know what didn't work then, etc.
