Lotion on newborns ?

posted 9th Feb
When do you start putting lotion on them to keep their skin moisturized ?
i was in the hospital all last week, and my BF's cousin was my roommate, she had her little girl 5 days over due. So i kinda got the idea of what to expect in the hospital since she didn't mind me observing what to do and stuff.. i know i wont be the same her baby slept right threw the night both nights only woke up once or twice to feed, my baby might not be like that and she had a girl so it will be a bit different, anyway i'll get to the point !
My hospital provides pretty much everything for baby. Receiving blankets, hats, burp blankets, you get a small bottle of baby body wash for a cloth bath. they use whips what you add water too which i really liked since she did let me change her once just to get the idea of how to change a NEW NEW born. endless supply of diapers lol they even give you a pack to bring home and a bag of the whips if you want. they dont give you qtips so you have to clean the umbilical cord with cotton balls, i don't really like that because little strands of cotton i noticed gets stuck to their cord.. ANYWAY..my point is ! they don't give you baby lotion, i do have a small bottle packed in his hospital bag, but it is sooo dry in the hospital i noticed when i was there that the baby's skin would get really dry .. especially if they where overdue ! is it safe to put the lotion on them even if they are a few hours old ? or should you wait ... i dont want his skin to dry up and be irritable .. and eczema runs in both sides of his family, some of his fathers side has is REALLY bad, my side not so bad is Johnson's the best to use on them ? and how much IF i can use it right away.. if not how soon can i use it ?

To get discharged from our hospital, you have to take a little mini parenting class, where they show you how to bathe baby and other stuff. They had us lotion her, she was not even a day old. So i'd say its perfectly fine. They supplied Johnsons, and it worked fine.

perfect ! my hospital isnt as good as that ! the nurses dont show / help with ANYTHING, your doing it all on your own. they come in every couple hours and ask when the baby was last fed and when they pooped and what it was like.. & they check your belly and BP and the baby . but there is no mini parenting class or anything like that.

I personally don't lotion my kids until 6m and still not very often. They don't need it and it's full of chemicals. I would use a raw coconut oil if you really feel the need.

oh i'm serious. i can count on one hand the nurses i actually LIKE that hospital. I wouldn't be having my little man there if the next hospital was 2 hours away and March is still a pretty iffy month for the weather in Newfoundland. plus my family wouldn't be able to come in the other hospital. and all depending on what TIME and WHEN i go in labor tells me who is going to end up bringing me to the hospital. so far i have my brother that lives up stairs from me , my uncle that lives next door to me and my mom that lives across the street all on call just in case lol..

But i tell you another thing, my OB will more then likely not even deliver my baby, not one of the girls that had their baby's last week the ob delivered, there is only ONE ob in that whole hospital. and he is also the woman's doctor and the pediatric doctor.. 4 baby's where born last week. and the nurses delivered every baby, the ob delivered the after births.

I didn't. IMO newborns need time to allow their bodies systems to regulate

We started using lotions a few days after she was born, her skin got so dry at the hospital we had to. They gave me the Johnson's but I hated it, so I switched to the Burt's bees, I just love the smell of it! I wouldn't use anything else now.

It gets dry because they have to peel. They need a new layer of skin for the new world after soaking for 9 months.

No my daughter developed dry patches on her face. It wasn't anything to do with shedding her womb skin... That doesn't start till 40+ weeks, that's why overdue babies are usually born with peeling skin. Charlie came at 36 weeks and because of conditioning and low air humidity her skin became dry.
