Sex after bed rest

posted 9th Feb
So, I've been on bed rest for a few weeks, had a little preterm labor scare. Well, I've officially gotten clearance to start resuming normal activities this week (slowly resuming, that is). So naturally my two big questions were A. Can I pick up my daughter again? And B. Can I have sex again? The answers were basically sort of and sort of.

I'm allowed to have sex, but I have to be super careful. Literally every complication thus far had been somehow connected to sex. Bleeding at 14 weeks? Started after sex. The UTI that silently spread throughout my pelvic area and started sending me into preterm labor? Probably sex that did it. The loss of my mucus plug, the first sign something was wrong? Happened after sex. I'm obviously pretty concerned about it. I'm 32 weeks now, so sex is obviously complicated enough as it is. I'm also supposed to be "cautious" with orgasms, since they trigger contractions. So basically, I'm supposed to be having sex without moving too much, without irritating my cervix too much, and maybe even without an orgasm? Yikes.

I don't know guys, I'm pent up! I haven't been able to spend any time with my partner (or myself for that matter, damn orgasm ban) since before all this started. It's going to be valentines day and I'd really love to have a normal date night, buti don't want to end up spending February 15th in labor. What do you think I should do? Does it sound worth it to try (SUPER pent up you guys)? Should we just sort of work our way up the intimacy ladder and try to figure out how far I can safely go right now, or is it better to just keep having the sex life of a nun until I get closer to term? So conflicted!

Personally I'd wait until I was 37 weeks before resuming any sex. You're still early, Momma...

I would absolutely abstain from sex. It's too risky imo and not worth the potential consequences.

That's what I was leaning towards too. I'm actually surprised they're allowing an increase in activity at all this early, honestly. They seem to want to see how my body responds to going off bed rest, but I'd hate to find out the hard way it was too much too soon.

Do you think ANY sexual activity is too high risk, or just penetrative sex?

Yes, any sexual activity. You should be on pelvic rest until 37 weeks, IMO.

It is strange that she okay'd it at all. I've only had one ultrasound that showed regained cervical length, and even that was only an all-time high of 2.8cm. I'm still contracting too, but I guess they figured since they were able to locate and treat the infection they believe caused all of this that I'm out of the danger zone. I have a primary and a secondary midwife, it was the secondary who okay'd trying sex again. The primary had previously mentioned starting to lessen restrictions after 34 weeks if I showed continued improvement, which definitely contradicts this sex at 32 weeks business.

Now that I know I'm not just crazy and overly cautious about this I'll definitely be chatting with my primary midwife before I make any big changes, let alone trying out sex.

I understand. I would talk to the primary midwife as well.

I hope you have a uneventful rest of your pregnancy. Good luck!

Do you know anything about cervical incompetence or PTL?
