Is it me? Inconsiderate or control?

Here's my problem. My husband and I have two cars. His truck which is a three seater and a ford focus. His truck means everything to him, just as much as my car means to me.
I'm at stay at home mom and need transportation for appointments for myself and my girls. Also, to have a car to get out of the house every once in awhile. I think all mothers can relate to that.
So my husbands truck is eventually going to break down (transmission). Originally, he was going to take it to the shop to get a new transmission or go to a junk yard to find a transmission. Well, today he decided he wants to buy a ford manual that the dealerships use to work on there vehicle's to fix his truck himself. Which means I will be without a car for however long. My husband is in the ARMY and its hard for him to get out of work to go to any appointments for myself or the kids. He's never worked on transmissions and has no clue what hes getting himself into. My personal opinion is he's jumping the gun to get it fixed instead of going to a shop to get it worked on. His explanation on to why he changed his mind about taking it to a local shop is because he doesn't trust anyone working on his truck because they could mess it up.
He says the last time he took it to the shop weve been using for a couple months they didn't refill his antifreeze ect.
My question is, do you think its fair for me as a wife and a mother to go without a car for weeks or even months just because he wants to fix his transmission? Do you think that's control?

I think hes just not taking you or the situation into consideration, it doenst sound like a control issue to me, unless you've had issues with him controlling you in the past.

I don't think it's fair to you. If I were you I would sit down with him and find someone who rebuilds transmissions in your area. Once he starts going through it himself the cost goes up for someone else to fix it.

Also you mentioned he is army. Look on base they usually have an auto skills center where mechanics help you do the work yourself. I would look into that if hes desperate not to take it to a shop.

He definately shouldnt fix it himself. He is gonna spend alot on a tranny and the smurf it up putting it in when he has no idea what he is doing. Its not a small fix like a water pump, feul filter, fan belt, ect. Thats a HUGE thing to try and fix yourself. He needs to get it done professionally done, or dont do it at all. Unless the truck is new and worth a lot of money, I honestly would look at buying a new car.
