Water Breaking Q's

posted 9th Feb
With my first two deliveries, the doctors broke my water so I have no idea how exactly it works when it happens on its own. I've looked into it a bit and decided to avoid artificial rupture this time around, but I wanted to find out about other people's experiences with natural rupture.

I know it's not always this huge gush like they show in the movies, but I don't know much else. Is it usually accompanied by your bloody show and/or mucus plug? Did your contractions start before or after your water broke? Could you still feel your baby moving around afterwards, or did he/she sort of settle down? How long was it between your water breaking and your LO arriving? And any other info that might be good to know...

I lost my plug, had my bloody show and then my water broke. This all happened within 30 minutes. When my water broke, I didn't feel a gush or hear a pop. I just felt warm. I figured it was my water, so I put on a pad. It wasn't gushing out, but it was leaking pretty consistently. Contractions started within 15 minutes, and my daughter arrived 18 hours later with the unwanted aid of Pitocin.

My water broke with my last two pregnancies and I wasn't even in labor. It had no bearing on how close to delivery I was. I was induced. With my daughter she came 6 hours after induction, with my son it took over 30 hours.

Oh wow! I'm not sure if mine can even break on its own either, because the doctors always took charge and just did it. My last labor wasn't very long though (and the doctor broke my water just before it was time to start pushing), so I'm curious if it might just break while pushing or even stay intact until after the baby's born.

How long before your labor did your water break? Or did they induce you because it had broken and your labor hadn't started on its own yet?

How leaky was it? I mean, did the pad keep things pretty contained, or did it overflow at all? I'm just asking because we're about an hour away from the hospital, and I'm not sure if wearing a pad during the drive would be enough to protect our seats if my water broke! lol

I changed my pad before leaving for the hospital, and by the time we got there 25 minutes later, I had leaked through the pad, my jeans and the towel I was sitting on. Do you think your water is leaking already? I certainly hope not.

Oh, no, my water's definitely not leaking yet--thank goodness! I don't even start my third trimester until tomorrow, but I've just been reading up on different labor things. There's so much I didn't know or experience with my first two deliveries, so I'm curious about the way things *could* go this time.

My water broke on its own. I got out of bed to pee and as I was walking down the hall I felt a gush. After that it was just gushes here and there. I never lost my plug that I know of.

I had already had my bloody show and had been in labor for a few hours (probably around 6 when my water broke). I was in the middle of a contraction on my bed rocking on all fours when I felt a pop and gush. After that with every contraction more and more gushed out.

Mine broke as I was labouring in the tub both times. It just felt like a warm gush. I was in transition, maybe 15 minutes before I stared pushing with my first.

My second was only a small gush, later, while I was pushing, my midwife offered to check me and she broke my water the rest of the way (she asked first). She told me later that sometimes there is an inner and outer layer and that's likely what it was. Things were pretty intense at that point and breaking my water actually helped things feel better.

I've heard good things about the baby being born before the water is broken and would have loved to do that, but I'm happy with the way everything happened  .

Oh, wow. Were there any complications or scary risks with that? I've never heard of a doctor letting things happen that way (though I have seen a Baby Story or two where a midwife delivered the baby in the sac), but I've never heard why.
