IEPs and switching schools

posted 8th Feb
So kaylee has been dropped from her one school and will be starting her new school tuesday (we are moving to a different school district. She currently has an IEP for ST 2xweek (even though her last school she was lucky if she got to go once a week grr)

my questions (when i asked this school they said the speech therapist would call me once she sees kaylee (i hand walked the IEP to the school instead of waiting for it to be faxed) about how long after starting a new school should i be asking to talk to the ST if they havent met with her yet

and will her IEP be given to her new teacher? (they gave me the kindergarden news letter since it had the class list for vday on it when i enrolled her) and they said end of next week the kids will be tested on all the word sounds ( she doesnt pronouce a good majority of them correctly even though she knows them and i dont want them to say she failed because of it)

when i go in on the first day on tuesday i plan to talk to the p[rinciple (they want me to come in 45 minutes before school to meet with them so they can get to know her) and the teacher about my concerns

Yes, her IEP comes with her. Most likely her new teacher will want to set up an IEP meeting to go over it with you.

The ST should meet with her within a week.

The teacher should have already seen the IEP and make the modifications immediately (the teacher may need to get to know you DD a little to fully understand not just read a paper.)

I'd recommend you check in with both after a week.

BTW I'm a teacher.

they should definitely give the IEP to her new teacher. but, as far as the speech therapist, i have no idea when they should be able to see her or whatever. i guess it depends on the schedule as to when they can start seeing her and let you know when she will go.

thanks ladies.. i know hers is just for speech but you guys would be better at answering this question since alot of you deal with IEPs.. i think tuesday on her first day i'll talk to the teacher and explain her speech issues (you can talk to her and tell compared to other kids her age she sounds like shes 3) im just so nervous with the school changes (she was also bullied at her last school for her speech sad because they are only 5 years old)

yes, and it's also highly likely that the speech therapist will be at that meeting as well. at least at the school where i work, the speech therapist goes to the meetings too.

Yes her new teacher should receive a copy of her IEP and ST should be established as soon as possible. You should also expect an IEP meeting so the new school can accept her eligibility and possibly set new goals with new accommodations and modifications. It's crazy how much ieps differ from one district to another. Rewriting new ieps is a pain for new students because the case manager knows little to nothing about the child and must in large part rely on what someone else has written. We have 30 days to set up the meeting and rewrite the IEP.

Kudos to you for making sure her paperwork is delivered. I hate when we get a new student and are either not notified that the student is special Ed or do not receive paperwork for a significant time. I always feel awful that the child has a lapse in appropriate services. Any work that is completed during that time and failed, we curve the grade or allow them to redo the assigbment with appropriate modifications and accommodations. We try to institute the previous schools IEP as much as we can while we get to know the student and rewrite their ieps.

I'm a special education teacher in a grade 6 inclusion class. I have approximately 30 students and a caseload of 12.

she will only be at this school for 3 months the school she is suppose to go to is overflowed because they will nbot allow more then 24 students per class in k-3 and since she came so late she has to go to a different school till next year.. the good thing though is their speech therapist is onsite at each school (her last school the ST went between 4 schools)

i think im more nervous then my daughter... but i will be bringing up to her new teacher about the bullying at her last school for her speech so they can keep an eye on it

Since she was already receiving services at her other schools then her I.E.P. will follow her. The should contact you for a placement A.R.D. meeting (I.E.P. meeting.)

update on everything with the school switch

today was her second day of school.. the teacher said shes behind but its normal since she went from a half day school to a full day school.. but she said its obvious Kaylee gets frustrated talking because other kids will ask her "what did you say" and the teacher said some words are even hard for her to understand.. the speech therapist got her IEP yesterday caught up with me after school to ask a lot of questions and for me to sign paperwork so she can get all of kaylee's medical files from the audiologist but shes added kaylee to her caseload.

kaylee told me this morning the speech therapist came and got her but they didnt work on any sounds .. i asked what they did "oh we just talked and i made pictures for the other girl in speech.. which im guessing shes checking to see where kaylee is in regular conversation

it was alot faster then i thought and i meet next month to do a intrim IEP
