Kids with glasses

posted 8th Feb
We just found out that Sophia, our 5 year old will be needing glasses full time for a pretty off the charts astigmatism and far farsightedness. We get her glasses early next week, so far she is super happy and excited, and I am hoping that wont change!

If you have a child(ren) with glasses and they were super happy/excited about it, did that continue on?!

I am worried at first she will just love them (she is big into accessories  ) and then feel how tedious it is to always have to wear them, take them off for gym, ballet, etc then back on.. (obviously not a difficult task, but she is five..)

I am not that worried, but would just like to hear other experiences   Her Grandma has glasses, so does her cousin her age, and two other girls in her class and a friend she has known since pretty much birth, so I don't think she feels pressure of being 'different' at all.

Thanks!

with my son only being 2 when he first got them i was worried he wasnt going to keep them on, but he surprised us all and loved his glasses. mostly because i think he obviously saw a difference with how he saw with them on, and liked it better than what he was used to. over the years hes had his moments with he wants them off but overall he enjoys wearing them

Dd is 5 and got them a yr ago. She tells me she doesn't wear them at school even though she keeps them there

She used to take them on and off a lot in prek cause it takes time
To get used to them. Now she just says she doesn't like to wear them.

Dumb question..how did you know she needed them? Did she just get a routine check or was she having an issue?

That makes sense, totally normal issue with younger glasses wearers. She has a younger sister that is not even two yet, I am worried about her trying to get her older sisters, so I may have to buy her a fake pair. Thanks for the input!

i love those bottom right ones on her

That's around the age when i had glasses, i don't remember even thinking twice about them being inconvenient or odd.

The nurses did a check and sent something home saying she needs to get them checked, before this we had pretty much zero signs. She reads/writes and has never complained! Which is insane to me because her vision is BAD.. poor thing! But I mean, she was used to it so she didn't know it was 'wrong'.

Not a dumb question at all

Aw man, i'm sorry! Does she need them badly, or is it a part time thing?

Sophia needs hers pretty much all of the time except for her activities. (sports, dance, gym, etc)

I've had glasses since first grade. I'm very nearsighted. I can't really remember if I was excited about it at first lol but I do remember hating them not long after getting them. To this day I prefer to not wear them out of the house and I'm hoping one day I can get lasik.

Little kids can adapt pretty easily to changes like that- i'm sure she'll be good!
And fun! those are WAY cooler frames than i had as a kid

Mine was pretty young when she got them but now she is pretty dependent on them. You might have to remind her in the beginning but they'll probably become 2nd nature soon enough. She looks super cute!

Well she needs them to see the board more effectively. But apparently she must not need them that bad or else shed probably complain I'd assume. But she does have astigmatism but te dr couldn't get an accurate assessment cause she kept moving. I Should prolly take her back to get them rechecked now that she's older and get the lenses changed.

I'm awful but I spent a ton of $ on hers because I wanted her to look good haha. I found the best pair for her face that were cute without regard to $. Her insurance only covers lenses and cheapie frames that are fugly. So I'm glad she doesn't need them all the time cause shed break them for sure.

These are from 2 Christmases ago. It's so hard to find kid glasses IMO. They always look so big on them haha. But hers have little hearts cut out on the sides. So they're like indented.

I took dd at age 2 cause I had a lazy eye as a child and had surgery so I wanted her checked. She was fine. She failed her eye exam at prek so we took her back.
