How long do drugs show up in hair?

posted 8th Feb
I am asking because in the future I will be requesting one from DD's ... ugh I can't even type the words anymore... "dad". He has been a habitual smoker. When I was pregnant and took him back, he claimed to have been clean for months, and was clean until she was born. I'm not sure how long pot stays in hair. I thought all drugs were detectable forever. I read an article stating otherwise. Anyway, I also know he did shrooms AT LEAST once since she was born when he had walked out the first time... But that was a year ago... He had planned on coming to see her, and after about 15 minutes of him being there, he left to go "fishing" about 6-8 hours later (around 11pm when DD was OBVIOUSLY in bed) I messaged him. He said he did shrooms but was still planning on coming over. I told him no way in jose.... so I told the lawyer today... But I'm not sure how long it sticks in hair.......

as long as it takes for the hair to grow out from the time you did it... in other words he would have to shave his head bald, then test. even then they hair might show residual for up to an inch...

I read that it takes a month for it to even show up in hair.... he could easily shave his head and it would be an obvious maneuver.... BUT his hair grows fast so he cuts it frequently

Hair drug testing

Hair drug testing is a method that can detect drug use over a much longer period of time,[24] and is often used for highly safety-critical positions where there is zero tolerance of illegal drug use.[25] Standard hair follicle screen covers a period of 30 to 90 days. The growth of hair is usually at the rate of 0.5 inches per month. The hair sample is cut close to the scalp and 80 to 120 strands of hair are needed for the test. In the absence of hair on the head, body hair can be used as an acceptable substitute.[24] Even if the person being tested has a shaved head, hair can also be taken from almost any other area of the body. This includes facial hair, the underarms, arms, and legs or even pubic hair. Because body hair grows at a different rate than head hair, the timeframe changes, with scientists estimating that drug use can be detected in body hair for up to 12 months. Currently, most entities that use hair testing have prescribed consequences for individuals removing hair to avoid a hair drug test.
The claim that a hair test cannot be tampered with has been shown to be debatable. One study has shown that THC does not readily deposit inside epithelial cells so it is possible for cosmetic and other forms of adulteration to reduce the amount of testable cannabinoids within a hair sample.[15]

Ugh, I typed up a huge response to this only for it to get deleted.

As I was saying, hair tests vary. You can go back a few weeks or more than six months if you really want to (with really, really long hair, that is). I had a hair test done in treatment when I had just turned 18 and because they took only my most recent hair at the scalp it showed nothing.

Hair tests are expensive. If all he's doing is smoking weed then you might want to consider something else unless you're going for full custody. Usually weed doesn't keep a person from being a bad parent unless he's gotten to the point where he neglects or endangers your daughter as a result of his marijuana use. I'm assuming that's the case though if you're considering a hair tests and I'm sorry to hear that =(

If I were you I would opt for a test that goes back as far as possible. Do NOT tell him you are considering this because he could shave his head and that would defeat the purpose entirely. However, even if he cuts his hair really short a little bit of hair can still reveal quite a bit of use. Hair test show all drugs except for certain hallucinogens and as far as I know they're not showing bath salts yet but will be as soon as scientists develop tests for that. Anything and EVERYTHING will show up on this test if he takes it.

Good luck.

Even if he shaved his head they could use leg or arm hair, or even pubic hair according to wiki.

It can be taken from any part of the body. So honestly the answer can vary.

Yeah but if a court orders him to do a hair test and he shaves all his body hair, wouldn't he get charged with something anyway? lol
