What's the best way to tell when I'm ovulating

How can I tell when I'm ovulating without buying a test if my periods are not normal? When I got pregnant last year it was completely by surprise. I never keep track of my periods because they are so irregular. I had my first one i think the end of dec. after giving birth in sept. and haven't had another one.

I was able to tell by increased discharge.
