Speech delayed

posted 7th Feb
My son has been in speech therapy for a few months now.hes almost 25 months old
While I am seeing progress it's not much
He no longer uses sign language, and when he says actual words he hides his face.
He babbles like an infant, hljust using different sounds
His hearing is almost perfect and he's had 2 autism screenings and they come back fine
He wants to talk but its like he can't,he gets frustrated when he can't communicate

I work with him at home and it doesn't help and I don't think 30 minutes a week is enough with his therapist
She said today that he's Very stubborn.he just kinda looks at her with a blank stare and ignores her

I know he's still young but his pedi keeps bringing it up and they are saying he should have about 50 words and he has less than 12

I guess this is just a vent but if anyone has any tips or advice on how to deal with this and help him I would appreciate it

It's going to take more time. It took my daughter about 6-8 months before she stopped talking in jargon.

How did you get him enrolled in the therapy? Did he have a full evaluation or just speech?

DS has speech and regular "teaching" therapy to boost his knowledge and vocabulary. Speech is only 1 hour a week and therapy is 10 hours a week.

His pedi recommended it and he had a full evaluation with the therapist
His miter skills are advanced but his speech is delayed

Did they say anything about cognitive? If that's average or above average then really there's not much else they can give you. One hour is the maximum for speech therapy in my state. I guess any more would be like beating a dead horse KWIM?

She said "he's very stubborn"??

Anyway, try to put in for more time with ST!! I also found with my daughter that using SL, until she started talking was helpful! It's better for them to sign and be able to communicate than them learning NOT to sign, while not being comfortable enough to use words yet. They need to communicate somehow, otherwise they just get frustrated and give up..

Cognitive is also advanced
It's just the speech

He's really smart but he just won't/can't talk

So he's just a late talker. Try to bump up the therapy to an hour and encourage him but there's really not much else you can do. If he's advanced he probably CAN talk but doesn't want to. You can't really push it if that's the case.

Yeah
He has talked before,he knows 5 words in sign language and can verbally say them but he won't
About a month ago he stopped using sign language and we can't get him to do it anymore.
When he does talk verbally he will hide his face/run across the room and say it.he only says about 3 words daily and he won't say it to your face.

Pretty much
I just feel like I messed up by not trying to make him say words earlier,I knew what he wanted and I'd give it to him.
He just recently started saying actual words but 98% of the time it's just jargon

My son got speech from 2 to 5... He started really taking off with his talking when he was 3 and a half. Have you seen if there is a head start program near you? Is he home with you all of the time or is he at daycare?

Have you thought about daycare? All my son needed was some child interaction and he took off.. and it was no stopping him. lol.
