Antibiotics BEFORE C-Section

posted 7th Feb
My doc says he's going to start me on antibiotics before my c-section at the end of the month. Is this common? I've never heard of this until now. I plan on breastfeeding, and usualky get horrible yeast infections from antibiotics. Should I go ahead and look into probiotics to take to reduce the chances of thrush? My second daughter and I passed it back and forth for weeks because of the antibiotics we were both on for pneumonia, I really want to try and dodge that bullet if I can.

I was only given meds when they were prepping me for the c-section.

Nope, but I'm immuno-deficient

I don't know how "common" it is, but I didn't have that done with either of mine (both planned). Honestly, if they give you that much trouble, then I wouldn't take the antibiotics. Wait and see if you need them. They could cause more harm than good.

I seriously thought about that, lol.
I have no problem taking them if I'm sick, but I'm not sick. With Emma and Annie I got antibiotics after, though...

I would imagine if you have an autoimmune problem they are giving you antibiotics to cut down the risk of you getting a horrendous infection that can leave you sterile after they cut you open. sounds pretty typical to me.

Huh, weird. I never had it with my first two (well second was an emergency, but had a repeat scheduled if I didn't go into labor in my own. I was trying for VBAC.) Guess I'll just suck it up and take them then. Any suggestions on probiotics, or will my yogurt addiction likely keep me covered?

I am not familiar with the practice of giving antibiotic before c -section. Strep B shouldn't have anything to do with it since the baby will not be exposed to the vaginal canal during c-section. I will say, I had a horrible infection after an emergency c-section and let me say that's one bullet you want to dodge!! It was horrific! I would do what doc says bc if you are already immune compromised it can put you at higher risk of post surgical infection. I am a RN, and I can tell you from personal experience and from what I see everyday, there are some seriously bad bacteria out there, even in an OR.
