receiving blankets

what are the uses of receiving blankets? i do have baby knowledge and have worked in a nursery for years, but never once used a receiving blanket and now that im expecting everyone is giving us receiving blankets and im not sure the uses or necessity of them. help...

lol lots of things! we used them for a quick dabbing of milky/drooly chins, toss it over you shoulder for an instant nursing cover, thin blanket in the summer, makeshift change pad, burp pad.... the list could go on  

I know they make really great burp cloths lol. I think they are also good for swaddleing when your baby is brand new.

Swaddling, burp rags, a quick changing place so you dont get piss and smurf on your carpets or couches, a light blanket for when a real blanket is too much, a way to clean up various liquids, a way to prop up the babies head or roll them to place on either side of baby under the bassinet sheet to keep them from rolling onto tummy while sleeping, a quick snot rag in an emergency....
