So you think that teenagers telling their elders to smurf off , threatening, and hitting their parents has happened through all time periods? I agree that kids have always been smurfs.... no denying that. I think it's getting WORSE though. Kids have always talked back and rolled their eyes, or yelled "that's not fair" to their parents, but as a whole, I think children are so entitled now, that if they dont get their way, they act like complete smurfs. MUCH worse than they did in previous generations.

WHICH IS WHYYYYYYYY I mentioned in my blog that GOOD things have become of society evolving, such as civil rights, women's rights, etc. I think everyone is missing the point. There are THINGS I liked about the 50's... mainly the modesty, sense of community, and general respect for others (for the most part). Yes, I PERSONALLY would want to live there, because much of the things about it, I like. However, it's not for everyone, and I understand that.

I dont believe that crime rates were higher. There WERE crimes... no arguing that, but we have hundreds of murders... per day. Children dying from child abuse. Daily. Molestation and rape. Multiple times per day... and that's just in the U.S. alone.....

Rape and molestation (of children) is nothing new. Ever heard of Maya Angelou and her story? You hear about it more today BECAUSE people aren't so hush-hush about it, you have internet and youtube, etc.

You don't think there were lots of murders and rape back in the day? I can show you plenty of links of some of GRUESOME unsolved cases and rape (especially spousal rape) remained in the shadow due to the "shame."

There are many this agree with me... and many that agree with you. I guess it depends on your lifestyle and the way you think on this situation.

Those things happened everyday in those days to. There just wasn't 24/7 news to report on it. Nor was there internet. We didn't hear about these things but they were happening just as much.

But the people who actually lived during that time period, for the most part, wouldn't agree with you b/c they knew the REAL fifties, not the idealistic, picturesque image that you have thanks to I Love Lucy and other shows.

Seriously... did I say it never happened? Please show me WHERE I said that rapes, murders, etc. never occurred..... waiting. Okay then. Now.... I said that it happens MORE OFTEN nowadays. And what exactly does that prove? That less murders occured in 2010? Great. Leading up to 2010? Where are your statistics on that?

It may be on the decline as of now, but who's to say that wont change? Look at the statistics. Still higher than the 50's. So.... it's worse now... than it was in the 50's.

You went up on your soapbox so there's nothing left for me to say. I (me, just me) believe that I would do good in the 50's with their values and their way of life. Not talking about murders or rapes. I'm talking about PARENTING and general LIFESTYLE. We disagree. Have a good day.

So what was the point of making this thread if you weren't willing to debate the facts?   If you actually saw my very first post, I agree with a lot of what you said but still think you are missing the big picture.

I just think that before we start romanticize the past it would be best to actually talk to people who were there. Sure there were few positives to the fifties, but not enough to warrant wanting to live in that time period.

That's your opinion... I'm allowed to have a different one. I dont think I would have the same struggles as you, had you lived in the 50's. And honestly... you weren't there in the 50's either lol. You're looking up facts on the internet... ha ha. I have spoken to family members who lived in that time. I didn't hear about rampant crime everywhere and a horrible society.

And I did debate facts with you. We did discuss things but we're going in circles. We're obviously on very different ends of the spectrum and neither of us is going to see the other's point of view, apparently, so what's the point? lol

You cannot take crime statistics and compare them with today.   It was beat into my head when I was in a high school law class. Things were not reported properly.
