stripping membranes?

posted 6th Feb
My edd based off ovulation is this Friday, i know exactly when i conceived.
I went overdue with both my boys and truly don't want ANOTHER holiday baby. Im in pain. A pain i never felt with my 2 previous pregnancies. My hip and pelvis hurt so bad that i cannot get up or walk. I can barely stand. My 40 week appointment us tomorrow morning. We've already discussed induction, which i want to avoid. The reason for induction is because my labors last less than 4 hours from start to finish and I'm group b step positive, meaning the antibiotics don't reach my babies in time causing then to spend toner in the nicu, not fun. Anyways, i was wondering about having membranes stripped? Does it help to put you into labor? Since my labors are so short, do you think they could do that instead of induction and send me straight to the birthing center? What are your experiences with stripping the membranes?

It's not guaranteed to do anything, really. Sometimes it works, a lot of the time it doesn't. I get that you don't want to be induced, but it sounds like there are seriously valid medical reasons for it, don't you think?

For sure, but I'm truly hoping fit a natural water birth and I've already tried that route on pitocin, it wad not gonna happen. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it tomorrow when i go in cause if i can use a natural induction method, its the planning part that counts to ensure we get antibiotics within a certain tine frame, than I'd prefer that. Like if it will put me into labor right away, i wonder if they could put my iv on then do it instead of using pitocin. Does that make sense?

Yeah that makes sense, but the thing is... it's just not guaranteed to work! And if it is going to work, it usually takes 24-48 hours for anything to happen at all. If in 48 hours nothing happens, it's not going to. It *could* help with dilation. It sounds like it would be either too risky in your case (like if you were to go into labor unexpectedly 27 hours later or something), or way more trouble than it's worth if it doesn't work.

I'm totally with you, though. I'm trying for a VBAC and my dr. won't use Pitocin to induce it. If I don't go on my own, I'll have to have another C-Section, so I totally understand where your coming from with wanting so badly for it to happen. I hope you go into labor soon, mama!

It's worth a shot! I had a sweep at 40 weeks, it didn't work. 2 days later I had them stripped again and my water broke that night! Good luck

If you are about to go into labor it will move things along. You have to be dilated to get them stripped too. It is worth a shot!

For the health of the baby, due to my quick labors, the timing has to be right. It seems i may just have to be induced. Blech, i don't want to but i don't want another nicu baby either. My second born almost died.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Man. I really hope you end up getting to do it the way you want!

Congrats and lucky! I had mine done yesterday I got some cramping, and a little slimy barely noticeable but pinkish discharge. And another sleepless night NOT due to labor  ! Hopefully in the next few days I go. Good luck OP. It's worth a try. Lol I didn't even ask my OB to do it she just did.   Luckily I'm too far along to really care at this point. Good luck with everything

I had mine stripped the day before I turned 38 weeks and went into labor 2 days later in the morning. So, I believe it worked for me.
