"Security blanket"?

posted 6th Feb
Does you child have one? Not specifically referring to only a blanket - a toy, bottle/cup, anything they NEED to soothe them.
DS1 never really attached to anything seriously. DD did for a very short amount of time when she was about 2, and outgrew it within a few months. DS2 on the other hand...he has this freaking blanket that literally has to go everywhere with him. He can't even see you carrying it and not freak out. It's the only thing that soothes him when he's sick/tired/teething, he won't go to bed without it. It's not even the whole blanket, it's just one nasty corner that he's always rubbing on his nose and mouth. When he gets a hold of it he'll just sit there sniffing it and rubbing it on his face. It's so weird to me.
Anyone else's kid like this??

YES! My son's is a Grinch. Like last night I went to take him for his midnight trip to the potty, and I had to try Grinch away from him while sleeping lol. And then when he got back in back, he started rubbing Grinch on his face like he was kissing him lol. And he's 4 1/2 now. Grinch has been with us since He was a little over 2

DD is obsessed with her "nana" It is a blanket. She wants it every where with her. She is 3 and a half and we are trying to wean her off to just nap and bed time. So once she cuts out naps then she will only have it at bed time. She cries if we drive accross town (5 minutes) to walmart without it.
She does thing weird toungue sucky movement with it.

DS had a "gankie" [what he called his blanket] from birth to 2 1/2 years old. He would NOT sleep without it. He would do the same smurf - rub it on his face and ears lol.

We forgot it on a camping trip once when he was around 2 and he cried for like the first 12 hours. It was awful. But then 6 months later we went to my mom's and I forgot the blanket....but he didn't care and apparently never cared about it again after that.

DS2 is 7 months and has 2 things that calm him down a little. He's fussy, so there's no magic security objects but he likes his doggie and fuzzy duckie.

My son has his blanket. i dont think he attached to the blanket but more so something soft needs to be on his face in order for him to sleep and so we use his blanket in the side of him

It drives me nuts!
This is what he looks like right now -
It's like he's addicted to it.

And for the record those of you that aren't familiar with Mongolian Spots - that's what is on his back and shoulder. Not bruises lol

Aww how cute. He's still a baby - he may or may not outgrow it. But it's really common. If it helps him feel secure that's great! I wish DS2 had a security blanket or toy instead of Mama's boobie.

He's 16months, and this blanket has been by his side since he was 3 months old lol. It's so nasty, even after washing that one corner that he's sniffing is brown. He even tries to take it in the bath with him haha.
I'm just not used to it, I somewhat "worry" that the new baby seeing him with the blanket will cause them to attach to something the same way...YKWIM?

Yeah but that's totally fine. Just wash it often. Like I said DS had his for the first 2 1/2 years of his life. It was bright green when he was a newborn and grayish brown when we put it away. Some people still have it when they're 18 years old. There's no harm in something that will help a baby sleep better, trust me.

I guess I feel weird about it because my cousin is 23 and still has this disgusting pillow that she takes literally everywhere. She sucked her thumb growing up and she used to lick the pillow while sucking her thumb so it always reaked. I kinda still connect the blanket thing to that sort of "obsession" that my cousin has for hers.
I don't mind at all that it helps him sleep and relax lol. As long as he's not high school shoving it into his backpack i'll be ok : )

My dd is 10.5 yrs old and still sleeps with her first crib blanket, its now almost ripped in half, its winnie the pooh.

She dragged it around till she started kindergarten at 4 yrs old. lol

My middle dd does not have 1 thing its whatever she decides that night, but she has to suck on tags to sleep, has since she was 1 month old, no soothers just a tag, if she cant find a tag from a toy she turns her shirt around and uses that tag. If someone gives her a toy like a stuffed one, forst thing she looks for is a tag, and gets excited and says thank you for the tag. lol she is a weird one.

As he gets older you just have to limit it. Don't let him take it everywhere - cut it to night time and naps, or when he's sick. I know people who let their kids take it to school with them - don't be one of those mothers lol.
